4-way rotating mount joystick?
« on: December 12, 2005, 12:31:44 pm »
I am trying to make a mount for a 4-way joystick so that you can pull a pin and turn the mount 45 degrees and lock it in the new position.  I have figure out how to do a spring loaded pin, use the pin from an accordion door, and the rotating mount, I am going to cut out a round piece of plywood and mount the joystick to it.  The part I am having trouble with is how to disengage the pin and turn the plywood circle from the top of the control panel.  I thought I would toss it out here, since this group is one of the most creative I have ever found (look at the examples page for proof of this).  I have looked through several of the examples on the examples page, but there are 100's there and I have limited time to work on this.  So I guess what I am saying is HELP.  Thanks for any ideas no matter how crazy they sound.

Hi Scottie.

This isn't my invention, but I can't remember which website I found the thing on.  I'll keep looking, but this is mostly a rough sketch of what they had.

This view is from the underside of the Control Panel.

The control panel has the green blocks attached to it at the Xs.  These blocks support the inner circle and keep it from falling thru.  You'd probably want to make these pretty sturdy.

The inner circle has the red blocks attached to it at the Xs.  These keep the inner circle and joystick from being lifted up and out of the panel.  They also act as stops, limiting how far you can turn the joystick.

The other guy's drawing had specific angles for the blocks, to make it perfectly rotate 45 degrees before  stopping.  The spring pin could be sprung out from the center disk, lifting up to fit into a turning groove, and dropping back down to lock the new position in place...
Bitten by the cabinet bug... obsessing ever since.

For locking the thing in with a pin, you could try something like thing... push down to disengage the lock...

Here's a crazy idea.

Buy one from groovygamegear.com. Not cheap, but great.

I am trying to do this a cheaply as possible, I already have a 4-way that I am not using.  I do know that Ultramarc has the E-type that will do this, but it only comes in black, red or blue (I want yellow) for $16.00.  This is why I am trying to do it this way.  I do like the idea of the blocks that was mentioned.

Good joystick, but I think he's look for a 4-way to 4-way diagonal, not a 4 to 8 way switch.
97.4 percent of all statistics are full of crap.
