Leaf Button "tune-up" intervals?
« on: December 11, 2005, 11:05:06 pm »
Two questions:

1) Is it wise to enclose them in a fighter panel that you'd have to pretty much destroy to tune them?  Assuming I get them initially setup correctly.

2) What about if I used them only for P1/P2 start (ala PacMan)?  How long do you think they would they last that way?

I'm looking at a 1/2" wood panel and mounting "short" leafs with no holder, just the switch... at least I'm hoping.  I'll have to check to make sure I don't need to wedge the leafs to match up correctly.  Any insight here would help too.

I searched around:

The idea that leafswitch buttons have to be adjusted all the time is an old wives tale. Unless your cabinet will be placed in an arcade enviroment and constantly beaten and abused you shouldn't have to adjust the leafswitches more then once (if not ever).

The only problem with leaf switches is your going to have to re-align them after continual usage.  Eventually the leafs (leaves?) get pushed apart to where they don't make solid, or any contact.

I have been using leaf's in my cabinet for close to 2 years now. I have had no problems what-so-ever. My boys and their friends smash on them all day long. I can't see myself switching to microswitches. I have checked the underside of my control panel and everything is the same as when I built it. I wondered the same thing about the switches wearing out so I adjusted my player 1, #1 fire button switch a bit closer thinking it would even out over time. about 3 months ago i changed it back to the default because it never changed.

Use a scrap piece of wood attached to the underside of your cp to hold your switches.

All in all I like the way Leaf buttons feel and sound. I am no expert like some of these guys, however IMO the feel of my buttons easily beat the feel of microswitches in my local arcade. You may have to adjust them one day but I am still waiting for that.

Thanks, that's what I was wondering.  I haven't had to touch my PacMan, but they're only P1/P2 & I haven't been playing it that long.  I'm going to order some up for "general use".  I like them.
