Is this all I need?
« on: December 09, 2005, 02:04:26 pm »
I've been reading this stuff for a few months now, and after seeing all the options I just want to make sure this is exactly what I need before I go ordering a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff.

What I have:
Knights of the Round arcade Jamma cabinet with arcade monitor

What I plan on having:
20 button control panel (7 buttons per player, p1 and p2, 2 mouse buttons), 2 joysticks, trackball
OR
All of the above plus 2-4 extra buttons for a total of 22 for pinball related stuff.
I would assume I could double up on some buttons for pinball or the 7 button contols.
That would make it minimum 18 button/maximum 22 button.
Assuming I do not do any extra pinball buttons, is 18 buttons enough for moving around the programs, etc...?

What I need:
ArcadeVGA video card from ultimarc
J-Pac (It looks like this supports player buttons 1-8, p1, p2, start1, start2 for total of 20 buttons)

So is that it?  As far as the trackball is concerned, I don't really care much about whether it is authentic or not and was just planning on buying something at a local pc store.  I assume this means I can just plug it directly into the pc as usb and not worry about other trackball interfaces such as the optipac.

Is there anything else I should consider before ordering all this?  All input is helpful.  Trying not to waste money here...  Thanks.

Most PC trackballs are crap for even modest gaming. It's a part you can cheapen out on, but you'll be disappointed and cussing shortly.

They're made for browsing, not gaming.

You can always hack an old mouse and connect a real trackball to it.

As for pinball buttons... Depends if you plan on playing that pinball emulator. If not, I decided that there were not enough pinball games in MAME to warrant adding buttons. (If you don't count the pimball games that feature nude girls, I think there's only something like 4 pinball games.)
NO MORE!!

So basically at a minimum I will still need the vid card and jpac correct?  That is my best option?  I want to go ahead and order them if so.
