act Labs Gun and MAME _question_
« on: January 30, 2003, 02:35:31 pm »
I was hopeing somebody with an ACT LABS gun and MAME could answer a question I have. What gun games work with it and what ones do not? I have heard AREA 51 wont becuase of the "shoot of screen" to reload issue, is this true? if so what other games have this problem. I have the games but since I do not own a light gun have not looked at any of them. What games work and what ones do not, Im very interested in a Light gun, but if i can play 2-3 games, its not something I will purchase.

thanks
Clok

Well, the gun emulates mouse movement/clicking.  So any game in Mame that emulates the original arcade gun using a mouse should work.

No I don't have the gun but should be getting the TV version whenever they start producing them.

In Area 51 and Maximum Force, you  have to shoot the very edge of the screen to reload.  The Act-Labs gun simulates a right mouse button press when shooting off screen.  I am going to ask the Ultimate Patchers if they can create a "cheat" that will move the pointer to the far left an simulate the trigger; if this could be mapped to the right mouse button, those two games would play properly.

Until then, there is an unlimited ammo cheat for Area 51, and probably one for Maximum Force.

Other gun games such as Sharpshooter and Police Trainer don't require shooting offscreen, and thus don't have those problems.

There is a minor issue for games like Operation Wolf that use more than one gun button.  There is a side button on the Act-Labs gun (again, the right mouse button), but it doesn't move the pointer.  To use this as a grenage in Operation Wolf, you first have to shoot the target with the regular trigger, and then quickly press the second button.

Finally, the trigger only shoots once, no matter how long you hold it down.  Maximum Force has a machine gun as a powerup, but you have to pull the trigger for each round; same in Operation Wolf.  I wish the gun had a switch for an "automatic" mode...

Other than these quibbles, I'm happy with the gun... I can play Sharpshooter for hours...

So so far the AREA 51 and MAX force shoot at edge of screen problem is true. Is this as tough as it looks (to do with the gun?). Op Wolf and its twin (forget name) require lots of trigger pulling. SO what about some of the other Gun Games? how do they work? Im not really interested in calabration and acruacy, im more interested in the "odd" things you need to do to make the gun work in games (such as the edge of the screen shoot to reload stuff).  Anybody else want to mention anything?

thanks

Police Trainer has a wierd problem that if you shoot at the
screen 5 or 6 times real fast ,you will get 1 or 2 shots that appear to go off screen for no reason. I really only notice it
in the section where you have to shoot like 10 shots in 6 seconds into a target. This was true in version .61 I have not tried any of the newer versions.
