Don't know how to take this
« on: November 30, 2005, 01:52:32 pm »
I was on the BYOAC boards on Monday night for a long while reading about the new LED WIZ. I was perfectly happy, getting new ideas, minding my own business. Then my daughter says, "that's so sad, your on a board with a bunch of old guys sitting around just talking about video games". Old? When did this happen? Sad? I was dumbfounded. I had no response. I somehow feel like I need to to the shrink, lay on the couch and point at the doll or something.
I am 34. I grew up in arcades, actually nearly the age she is now. It does consume a lot of my thoughts, but ghaw, what a sucky comment to make.  :'(

I'm going to find a corner and weep senselessly now . ;)

What exactly, then, are "old guys" supposed to do?  Sit around and think about how every day is one day closer to death? :p

I sure as hell would have made it known that what she said was mean, so that she may think twice about saying such things in the future.

Was she just teasing you?  How old is she?
Even my 3 year old can dish out a good ribbing from time to time.  He recently told me he was going to sell me on Ebay! ;D  I have no idea where he got that from.

She may not actually know she said something crappy to you.
She is at an age where either sweet things or razor blades can fly from her mouth. Usually nice things, but... No I think she needed to get one in, saw the oppertunity and took it. I got got.
I was a little shocked at first, but, any father of a daughter knows that you gotta let some things roll. The moods come and go.

It is almost like the moods are on a cycle or something. ;)

I only really browse this site when I'm at work.. so ...   :police:

But I'm 26.  I'm not old and I still read and post to these forums.  And just wait till she gets on myspace.  then you can tease her for being a loser and posting about stupid crap all day too.  Hey turnabout is fair play, whether she's your kid or not.  ;D

You should always have a comeback line ready to go, a la George Castanza:

"The Jerk Store just called, and they are running low on you!"

Because I'm just guessing that his other famous line would not have as good an effect:

"Oh Ya!  I slept with your mother!"

(Although, that very well may be the most damaging thing you could say to you kids)

;D  Holy guffaws Batman (Burt Ward from my youth) if you guys are old then I am grandad at 45.  My daughter is at the razor or sweet age also....it is tough.  By the way this old man married a younger woman who makes six figures....too bad for you children.  And no she is not 400 lbs, actually blonde blue eyed beauty who works out daily and used to model.  Age does have its advantages

:o Always gives me a warm feeling when I see people who have that "Whats the babe doing with the old fart?" look on their faces.  I want to say "Having the time of my life"  We have been married for 10 years and I can honestly say each year gets better, she is a great wife and mother and is one hell of an executive vice-president at the firm she is with.  And hey she doesn't really think alot of this hobby but she likes the idea that I'm home with her and the kids and not out in the bars as some of my peers still do constantly.

Don't you let her get away with that!

You should have responded with something to the effect of "...at least I'm not hitting on your friends", which might be really inappropriate depending on her age so use your own discretion there.

Probably make her think twice about questioning how you spend your free time again :)

The folks here are not sad or pathetic (like the ones in the "lint that looks like politicians" collectors forums.)  We're people who have harbored a dream since our childhoods, and now that we are adults, can use the knowledge and abilities that we have gained since then to make it a reality.  More kids nowadays should have something like this to look forward to when they get to our age.

On another note, one of my 2 daughters and her husband are about to give me the ultimate joy/ death blow to my youth...a first grandchild.  I'm only 40!!  (I'm not old,I'm not old,I'm not old,I'm not old,I'm not old,I'm not old....)

Congrats RandyT -- no you're not old, you're just advanced for your age (which is a mere 3 years greater than mine) !

My 5YO son loves browsing the forums with me, along with eBay and KLOV ... he loves looking at cabinets and projects ("Can we get one of those, it would be so cool!"). If only he liked Asteroids so I didn't have to play so much Sports Jam and King Of Fighters.

My 5YO daughter doesn't have the same enthusiasm, but will play the occasional game of Bust-A-Move.

My 3YO son likes coin doors ... a lot ... I'm currently missing a number of mechs.

Cheers.

Im 24, so old enough to know better, young enough to do it again....

One observation I have made is it seems everyone is married.  Which i find interesting as you always get the idea the nerds that hang around arcades when they are young are never going to get a girlfriend.  These boards have proven me wrong.

Cheers oldies and youngans.

Worked for me :)

I just found it to be extra funny because  you are clearly as invested into the arcade 'scene' as anybody and you rarely post in this forum, so your contribution to the thread made me laugh out loud.  It's you quiet ones that people gotta' watch out for ;)
