Retrofit my RockOla with a ethernet MP3/netradio unit
« on: November 27, 2005, 01:57:13 am »
When I got this unit about 2 years ago I installed a spare DVD player I had that would play MP3s from a Data DVD. Soon my collection grew beyond 4.7gig and updating the DVD whenever I had new songs was getting old. I thought about an Apple Ipod for more capacity but the same old problem was updating it. I found the ROKU Soundbridge and it fit all my needs. I have wired ethernet just about in every room and with the hub I can just run new ones if needed. I installed a new ethernet jack behind the juke. The perfect place to install it was where the bill acceptor was. Preserving the 45RPM record player was essential and this spot was ideal. I mounted it on the platform where the acceptor was and surrounded it with blackout material. I then hit home depot and got a piece of lexan that I cut to shape. I placed a strip of masking tape where the window needed to be and shot it with black model car paint from the back, most paints do not stick to Lexan and this does. I then glued it over the opening. The result is that it looks OEM when in oppertaion. Allot like the LCDs that display the coins to insert etc. on vending machines. The functionality is awesome. It plays everything off the HD on the server so as soon as I add a song to the directory tree it is available. I think the only thing to do now is add a better equalizer with some bass boost to get the low end kick up at lower volumes.
