Can I do "Workstation" Jukeboxes around the house?
« on: November 20, 2005, 12:14:34 am »
I've been thinking about this since I got an iPod and have been fliling through my thousands and thousands of mp3s.

I'm interested in the concept and interface of the jukeboxes that people are building here, but I'm not really up for any additional 'furniture' in my house.   Additionally, I'd really like to have speakers and control from multiple rooms in the house.

With all of this in mind, I guess what I'm really looking for is advice on a "workstation" style jukebox setup.   The house is already wired with cat5 cable, so I'm thinking about setting up a media server somewhere and then a few 'terminals'.

Ideally, I'd like these "terminals" to be as small as possible.  Honestly, I'd like them to consist of a touch screen and that's all.  I'd love to see multiple touch screens that all were simply controlling the jukebox software on a PC elsewhere in the house.  I know I can't run a normal monitor cable for 50' and hope to get a good picture, so can anybody tell me if something like this is possible? Has anybody done something similar that I could use as a model?

Thanks

http://www.slimdevices.com/ could work (except for the touchscreen part) to just hook into your network.   There is a feature where you can sync up multiple devices too.   Web based tool as well to manage the whole setup.

I used the 50' monitor cable and it works well.   I can't run multiple devices, but then again, the lcd that I bought off ebay costs less than a slim device so I guess It all depends on your budget.

Really? I didn't think the signal would fare so well at a distance.  If it does, that's awesome, because I'm really not looking at dropping the cash that the SlimDevices wants.

Thanks for the reply.  Can you give me any more info about your particular setup with an LCD and 50' monitor cable?   Are you running a touch screen and, if so, are you running a USB cable that distance as well????

Thanks

Well, Google and I shall Find.

This is more than I want to spend on something like this, but here's a Keyboard, Video, Mouse extender that runs all the info on a single CAT5 cable and boasts runs of up to 500 FEET!

It's $169, but the fact that it can be done at all is impressive to me.... Maybe it's time for me to bust out a soldering iron and see what I can create....

I'm not running a touch screen.
