O-Box Control Panel

Well, I started it finally!  Here's what the thing looks like with the buttons sitting in place to see how it looks:

It hasn't been painted yet - obviously - but you can get an idea of the button layout I decide to go with.

More pictures of it can be found on my site:

Wow 10 buttons.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

Alternate button layouts?  In other words, are multiple buttons connected to the same input (more than one P1 Button #6, for example)?

Bingo.  I don't even think the iPac supports all those buttons if none were redundant :)

2 player Ipac supports 28 inputs, this control panel has 30 if they are all unique, I wish Odonadon would post back and let us know what his master plan is.

Actually the Xbox and PS2 Dual shock controllers both have 10 buttons (and thats not including the d-pad, and 2 analog sticks).  Actually there are 2 more buttons if you press down on the analog sticks, so its really a total of 12 buttons, 1 8way joystick, 2 analog joysticks...and thats per pad!

This shouldn't be compared to the iPac which is really for keyboard input.  The PS2 to USB converters use a USB joystick driver.  Two ps2 dual shocks would with be well over the number of iPac inputs.

Now would I have done the layout like this?...Probably not, but it looks like a prototype anyway (due to change).

Ah, well therein lies the secret.  It's all posted on my site :).   The two black buttons are wired to the 1 & 2 buttons, as are the two left white buttons in the bottom row of 4.

Why have those buttons then? If they are wired to the same inputs whats the point? Your website does not explain the reasoning for the extra 1 and 2 buttons.

The reason is (and yes, it's right there on my site) is to play the older games that used the 1 or 2-button layout like Galaga, Jail Break, Donkey Kong, etc.  I want to have the buttons seperate from the other 8 to give it that feel.  That's the only reason :)  Nothing mystical about it.

Obonadon,

Interesting design. It's nice to see innovation and change.  I used the standard 6 button street fighter layout and I can't tell you how many times I've moved my hand without knowing it and pressed the wrong button in a game that only uses 1 or 2 buttons. I end up doing nothing  and dying while jamming the buttons.

I also really miss the 4th button for neo geo games. When I update my main CP, it will have the 7 button layout.  Of course I have about 4 other CP's I want to do first ;)

Thanks!

Now I have a question.  In MAME, you can map keys to a game, right (in the tab menu)?  When you exit the game, does it save the settings?  If this is true, then maybe I'll wire the black buttons to buttons 7 and 8 (same as the far right white buttons in both rows).  Then I could use one of the black buttons as a thumb button for Neo Geo games and such....  Anyone have any comments?

The "O-Box"?  Is that something related to the "O-Face"?

Possibly :).  Can you tell I works in a cubicle?  I'll be making my O-face as I play the O-box.   :o

Oh god, I know this is a horribly old post, but I thought I'd put an update in instead of making a brand new post :)

I don't know any MAME/PC/PS1/PS2/DC/XBOX  game that uses so many buttons.

what do you want to do with so many  buttons????

Sorry for my stupid english.

I decided to wire the bottom black buttons to button 7&8 placement, instead of 1&2 like I originally intended.  I also made buttons 7 and 8 black - updated pic coming.

Advantages:

Tons.  The 7th and 8 buttons double as:

L&R for SNES games

Turbo switches for TG16 games

Alternate button layouts for MAME games.

Disadvantages:

Extra cost for extra buttons.  That's about it.

This all happened by luck, of course.  The buttons don't fall in place where I would normally rest my hand, so there's no room lost.

I would recommend utilizing all the buttons provided to you by the I-Pac.  You won't regret it.
