Any Comments on the SlikStik Cabinet + Quad Control Panel
« on: November 15, 2005, 11:14:05 pm »
I am thinking of taking the quick and painleess approach to building my first cabinet/ machine. Does anyone have any comments on buying the SlikStik Cabinet + Quad Control Panel?

If money is not an issue, then that is a very nice setup.  Actually, you might save money in the long run if it keeps you from buying all the tools and extra stuff.  When you factor that in, my cabinets usually cost $2000 or more  :o

Like Mark said, there are a lot of hidden costs to building your own.

Slikstik cabinets have a feature of being easily taken apart for moving. So if you move a lot, that's a huge advantage.

I think Slikstik will offer you a package deal if you get both the cabinet and the CP from them.

Lastly, you might consider a CO2 instead of the Quad. Consider how many people might be playing on the machine at once versus accurate control placements for Robotron and others.

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Cheap plug:
You could always get an arcade-in-a-box kit, then build a cabinet around it at a later date.  :).  Since everything is in the control panel itself (Computer, cdrom etc)

BTW, Saint will have his aiab kit soon for a review.

Although building a cabinet yourself will give you the most satisfaction and will ensure you get everything exactly how you want, that's just my opionion.  I realize a lot of people 1.  Don't have the space for a full size cabinet, and 2.  Don't have all the tools needed to create one.

i have the slikstik quad 4 setup, its a nice setup & in my case, im self employed & I had to look at time vs money, so it was the way to go, your still not buying a full complete cab, even when i built it there was still lots work, wiring, getting the computer ready & the bugs out, etc, if you do purchase one, i recommend adding some L clamps to make the cams hold better & any boards that were exposed & not covered with a laminate, i sealed with a clear coat, but its a awesome setup esp. with the betson arcade monitor
thanks

Thanks, I am in the same boat (self emplyed) no time or tools to build (have knowledge). Curious on the monitor...I was looking at the Wells Gardner instead, why did you choose the other?

Also, did you customize the the quad panel at all or upgrade anything?

I don't know Divemaster's reason for choosing the Betson over the WG D9200, but my reason was because it was considerably less expensive and I could drive to Dallas and get one.

Both monitors have their issues, but the WG D9200 seems to be the gold standard.

I chose the Betson for the same reason except...  I could drive to Baltimore to get mine.  I am very happy with it so far... just remember it is not a PC monitor... it has quirks...

You can always buy the control panel ( or just a blank control panel ) and then build the cabinet yourself.

The reason i went with the betson was at the time, well did not support 800 x 600 & kevin at retroblast favors the betson, not i do not know which is the better, i have never had any problems with mine except color flaws, which i fixed with my degaussing coil, nice to have from happ, also i did not get any custom features, because you get the premapped software from slikstik for the straight them, you do not have to fool with remapping, also as far as buying the blank, i did this to save money, & after i got to looking at the time & wiring plus buying the hardware it was within $60.00 of a premaid on from slikstik, i sold my blank & purchased the prebuilt which came in damaged but slikstik replaced it right away, slipping is a little slow & i wished they did not use particle board but its a nice setuo
