Dedicated hardware forum?
« on: November 13, 2005, 08:50:11 am »
I know that this site began and is intended to focus mainly on constructing arcade quality interfaces for various gaming devices as well as emulation, jukeboxes and the like. No question it does the best job on the web for that. It is also apparent that it has become a leading site in dedicated hardware matters as well. While RGVAC is a great resource it is far more difficult to track and search the info in a newsgroup format. More and more I see dedicated hardware folks turning up here and not really haveing a place to fit in. I own a mix of MAME and dedicated and a juke and I would love to see BYOAC become as much of a cornerstone for dedicated as it is for it's original purpose.

I think a fantastic addition would be a catagory for dedicated hardware with sub catagories for PCB, monitors, etc. I understand that this was never the original idea behind BYOAC but this community seems to be in the right place at the right time and really able to make a difference.

I'm not adverse to such a thing, but when it was raised before the forums at KLOV  were pointed out as the logical place. Comments from anyone?

There is already Arcade Misc, which is supposed to be for dedicated hardware.  The monitor forum covers monitors of all types.  People can post about actual jukeboxes in Audio if they'd like (but those posts are few and far between).

Why not rename "Arcade Misc." to "Dedicated Arcade Restoration & Misc."?  That way people will gravitate towards it with questions/answers for dedicated machines.  Right now it isn't clear that questions for dedicated machines should be posted there.

Then if there's enough activity, some daughter boards could be created for PCB repair or whatever was needed.  I'd like to see more discussion on dedicated machines.

I thought the Arcade Misc was supposed to be more about other games found in an arcade, such as pinball, Skee ball, air hockey and such.

why not make the Hardware Forum a daughter board of the misc forum to test the waters before making it it's own board.

Having a "real arcade" board is a good idea, but i always thought this forum was mostly a MAME forum and   just tolerated the now and then dedicated question, kinda like a Ford car forum with the occasional Chevy question.

Maybe it's time to expand.

Not a MAME forum, not a MAME forum, not a MAME forum :)

arcade controls. When this site went up MAME was just one of many many many emulators.

It is true that the KLOV forum is based on original hardware. Some very knowledgable folks too. PAige is a mod over there.

Not quite as friendly a forum to newcomers as this one, but good info to be had.

I think Arcade Misc is a good place for that stuff.
I assume by hardware you mean PCBs and power supplies?  Because everything else is covered.  The controls are covered in main, monitors in monitors, art in art, and BST.
If it is a vector question people will usually point you to vectorlist.  Otherwise, as you said, rgvac and klov are still some of the best resources for technical questions.
