Pac-Man Touch-Up Paint Codes
« on: November 13, 2005, 12:48:32 am »
After months of searching, mixing, and lost time and $$$, I now have all the Pac-man touch up paints to my satisfaction.  Here's my detailed list, in case anyone wants to touch up their Pac-man.  But, I can't make any guarantees.  They look nice on my machine, but I can't guarantee they will work on yours!

All formulas are for quarts.

YELLOW: (source - Ace Paints)
Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo Oil base "bright yellow interior incandescent"  Ultradeep Base - Base 235-4B.
Colorant   (OZ)   (Shots)   (Halfshots)
GY   -   1   -
WH   -   4   -
YW   2   26   1

(My Grade: 99%)  This is an excellent match and light years better than anything else I tried, although they had to adjust it right after mixing, hopefully the formula reflects those changes.  It also goes on very thin, so requires 8 or more coats for good coverage.

BLUE: (source - Sherwin Williams)
Sherwin Williams Coloraccents Interior Oil-base Semi-gloss, Ultradeep Base.
Colorant   (OZ)   (32)   (64)   (128)
W1-White         -   34   1   -
G2-NewGreen -   11   1   1
L1-Blue         -   42   1   1
N1-RawUmber -   1   1   -

(My Grade: 97%)  This was a bit of a lucky match based on a "Glidden Soldier Blue" sample and about 4 remixes.  It isn't perfect but it's nice, you have to look close to see the difference.

RED (darker): (source - Sherwin Williams)
Sherwin Williams Coloraccents Interior Oil-base Semi-gloss, Real Red base.  (This uses their "Real Red" premix as a base.)
Colorant   (OZ)   (32)   (64)   (128)
Y1-Yellow       -   50   -   1
Y3-DeepGold -   45   1   1

(My Grade: 99%)  Since Sherwin Williams previously told me there was no way they could mix my red, I was surprised they later ended up with something this close.  Maybe the first time they weren't basing it off of the Real Red.  Anyway, it's quite good.  This DARKER red is used on areas like the Ghost Monster mouth and eyes, and some of the straight line art.  The difference in the reds is because of the undercoat (in this case blue.)  This could of course be affected by how the machine was painted, so your reds might vary?

RED (lighter): (source - Home Depot)
Evermore Interior Latex Enamel Semigloss   Base 3 (HD6413)
Colorant      (OZ)   (48)   (96)
AX PermYellow   1   8   1
KX White      0   14   0
R  ExteriorRed   2   28   0

(My Grade: 98%)  This LIGHTER red is used on areas such as the Pac-man eyes, and the Pac-Man logo.  Anywhere the red has an undercoat of yellow.  Don't be concerned that it looks PINK in the can.  It dries darker and redder.  Unfortunately this is the only paint that is latex-based, so you can't mix it with the other oil-based on the list.

BLACK: (source - Sherwin Williams and Ace Paints) MIXTURE of:
Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Oil-Base Satin Black (6403-25697)
Benjamin Moore Impervo Alkyd High Gloss Metal&Wood Enamel Black (C133 80)

(My Grade: 97%)  You will find the S/W Satin Black goes on too flat and light-grey, and the B/M High Gloss too shiny and deep/dark black.  The best mix ratio is somewhere between 3:2 to 1:1 Satin:HighGloss.  Of course if you can find a good semi-gloss black, that would be better.  But just don't think "black is black."  The deepness and lustre will matter more than you realize.  So having these to mix for a ratio that works on your machine may not be such a bad thing.

I think I've been in and out of every layer on the artwork.

Reality is, for most painted games, there is no perfect match.. Each machine faded differently or was even painted differently from the factory, thus no 'right' match.  It's all 100% subjective as to what you're happy with.
