DIYers willing to build for sale?
« on: January 23, 2003, 07:05:27 pm »
hey guys, after no luck looking into commercial units, like hanaho...  i posted this to AGM, maybe here will help too.

hey guys -

last year i was in the process of buying a MAME machine custom built for me, but the money i was counting on didn't materialize (sincerest apologies to Ted J!) - so I went ahead and built my own for less money.

It was cool and all, but on the cheap.  It wasn't super-professional to look at and just didn't spark for me, even though i loved playing all those games on it.  I sold it just after i bought my new house.

So now, I want another one.  A better one, a bigger one, a faster one, you get the idea (the one i wanted to begin with).  One that is really well made, looks professional.  And i've seen some homebrew ones that are out of this world.  (Rick [Martinko?] comes to mind readily)

needs:
-fast enough puter for modern fighters like MK2/3
-25" monitor or bigger (i want either the MK/NBAJam style cabinet or a Showcase!)
-2 player CP, 6 buttons and an 8-way per side
-a few extra buttons
(cancelled a thought about a trackball, i dont need it)

anyone out there got the mad skills and some free time?

I'll pay for it, too, long as it's under 2 grand i should be safe.  ship, deliver or pickup, just note i'm in northern VA.

thanks
Dave

You probably shouldn't tell people that you stiffed another builder. Its going to make it difficult to find someone willing to work for you...

There are other commercially available cabs or kits have you looked into any of those?

well, i guess i didn't exactly stiff him, we kept in touch the entire time and it just didn't happen, he told me it was fine as he could sell to another waiting buyer anyway.  I certainly understand the ramifications that can have on one's reputation.

at any rate, this time around i'm not going to be waiting on money that may or may not happen.  that is just a mistake any way you slice it and i'm not doing business that way anymore.

the only commercial ones i've seen are hanaho's, MAS systems' and greg "arcadeshopper" mcgill's.  i prefer to go the DIYer route as most of you guys i have seen can do just about anything, whereas commercial units aren't quite so flexible.

cheers

I applaud your honesty jammacade.  Things happen.

What I would do if I was building this for you (or anyone else) is have you pay for the parts up front.  You pay for the labor when it's all said and done.  If you don't have the cash for the labor within 30 days of finishing the project, the cabinet (and all the parts) becomes my property.  It would be a fair way of doing business.

I'd love to help jammacade, but I live in WI and I don't see myself driving that far any time soon :)

well.. you said you did it before... but not satisfied....

now.. which part did you not satisfy on ??...

if its just cosmetics....

I think what's going to be easier will be you go spend some $$ and get a good condition cab.... and stuff it with new monitor... and new computer....

then all you need to do is just control panel... (which should be easy....) or guys like Snaaake should be willing to build a control panel for you with some labor cost.... (ok... I'm only guessing here... ) but he did it quite a few times before....

thing about just ctrl panel is.... you can ship it.... easier....
but the whole cab.... hard to transport.... so... has to be close by.....

Quite true - I do think that it was mostly cosmetics I wasn't happy with.   plus, the computer I used wasn't the greatest but that was okay since it was only running the classic, older, vertical games with one joystick.   Nowadays, if i'm going to shell out the bucks i want it to be hardcore inside and out.   I'm not a computer hardware person so getting the other one running was a miracle of modern technology plus luck.   i've always believed i could buy much better than i could build though.

If you have trouble, work out a construction like contract.  Front 50% of the material bill to start, then pay materials and labour from there on a %complete basis.

Wow, replying to a 3 year old post, that's desperate...unless he didn't bother looking at the date of the post...I've done that...

It does seem a bit odd.....

But I'd have thought if he was just trolling for business he would have included his web site address and stuff as well.
