Bookcase/Storage Unit Suggestions
« on: November 09, 2005, 09:57:29 am »
I'm in the middle of a remodel after a water pipe leak flooded an area of the house we call "the playroom".

I've refinished the walls, ceiling, painted, and put down a new floor.

I'm now in need of replacing the bookshelves and other storage units that were damaged ('cuz they were laminated particle board and water damage just like a cab). Fortunately, the cab was sitting in the back of the room and up on casters so it took no damage.

What I have been looking for is like a black laminate bookshelf with doors....these shelves hold the kids games and other items and the overall appearance of the room would be nicer if I could they could be tucked away behind a set of doors.

I'm operating with a small budget as I be a single dad raising three kids on my own but for the life of me I can't seem to find anything that fits the description. All I have found thus far is some $100-200 modular units from office supply retailers but they are cherry or some other wood laminate color....no black.

I'm looking for black to match the motif of the room.

I thought someone here might have some ideas to share for something they have seen or heard about.

I look forward to any and all replies.

If you're handy with tools and have access to a table saw, you could buy the material at Home Depot (with Black Laminate) and Build it Yourself.

If just for toys, Have you considered a chest (or chests)? Could double up as a coffee tabe/end table.

I agree with the BYO crowd.

Link to my gameroom pics

I built all of the shelves and cabinets that you can see in those pics, and I had never done anything even remotely like that before. It's not at all hard if you're just willing to devote some time to it.

Don't make me build a bookshelf and then drop it on your head. ;)

not only would that require you to build a book shelf, but also require you too move the bookshelf to my area way too much work for you.

maybe it would be easier to photoshop the bookshelf over my head

It would be easiest for me to do nothing. I think I'll do that. :)

speaking of doing nothing.

With this new job everytime the boss comes around, I start thinking that he's going to say something about how I'm not doing anything but just sitting there. I keep forgeting that I'm paid to do nothing.

Yes, I've been considering just BYOC (abinets).....

....and based on a lack of finding what I am really looking for at a price I would be willing to pay I may just have to go that route.

Like so many, alot of "todos" on me plate so was hoping to find something reasonable that might help me mark that one off the list but constructing myself would certainly enable me to create the look that I am after.

That's exactly why I did it. I had very limited space and wanted to make the most of it.  Even with no experience, I still got everything built in one weekend and painted the next. Do yourself a favor and rent (or in my case borrow) a compressor and a nail gun. It made the job about 100x easier.

If you could round up some milt cartons (the big plastic ones), and some 12" shelving material at HD, you would knock something up together pretty quickly I would think.

Something like thus?

I coulda swore I saw something fitting that description at Wal-Mart, but I dunno what size you're looking for.  I know they're trying to get some classy pressboard furniture in there, so mebbe check 'em out.

I found that pic before too.  It was on a "Things to beware of when becoming a landlord".  What was that thing from the other picture that you had in a corner?  That looked like a leash and a riding crop, but it just didn't make sense with the other items they were grouped with.
