version of MAME with Robotron fix
« on: November 02, 2005, 11:32:05 pm »
Hi all,

I've read about the newer version of MAME which fixes the speed issue in Robotron but I couldn't determine from my readings which version(s) of MAME incorporate this fix - can someone fill me in?

Thanks,
Breaker

You might have better luck checking the mame.net message boards.  Although I know people can be pretty rude around there.

I wish I knew, but I sitll use mame .67 :).

I think it was .98.  But try .100 or even .101, they're fine.  Not sure about versions after that, Aaron's screwing with memory cores and shiznit.

According to the what's new files included with MAME, Aaron rewrote the Williams driver in the 95u3 release so the first "offical" build to include the changes would be MAME 96.

More info here(seach for "williams")...

Thanks folks!

Ok, one additional question (if it's allowed by board rules - let me know Peale)...

Do I need matching ROMs in order to get the benefits of the Robotron fix? For example, if the fixes were incorporated into MAME 96 (or 98) would I need the ROMs for these versions to gain the benefit of the fix?

Thanks again!
Breaker.

You do need the updated ROM. I went from .84 to .99 just to have the new Robotron. It makes a subtle but noticable difference. My scores are now back to about where they were in the arcade. With the .84 ROM, I couldn't even get close.

The ROMs are actually exactly the same, but they added a couple PROMs for accuracy's sake.

OK ....I have a SUPER dumb question....but.....

.....if I'm understanding this thread correctly Robotron runs too fast.....unless you're using a later "corrected" version?

I have Robotron on my arcade cab that I play w/my dual joy stick "module" and it's friggin' hard....(I think it's vers. 76 or so).

....is it running too fast?

I tried out my GBA version from the Midway collection the other day and it seemed a lot SLOWER than my mame
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

...hmmm.....that explains a lot as to why I find the game so impossibly hard!

thanks for the tip.

I'll give the 96 version a try.

Thanks again!

Hi all,

So the consensus seems to be that MAME v.96+ (and v.96+ ROMS) are the ones to go with.

I asked because I have .97 ROMS but would upgrade if people thought .98 or even .100 (or 101) would be a better bet.

Cheers,
Breaker

....well I just updated my mame to verison 1.01 and loaded the latest version of Robotron....and HORRAY!.....exactly as you said it would be.

I got farther then I ever have....I never realized there was an issue w/Robotron.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Timewarp to Summer 2012, the 30th anniversary of Joust and Robotron!

As of mame 0.145u8, Williams games with blitter are within 95% accuracy of a real board set.  Hurray!
