PS/PS2 to USB Adapter
« on: January 21, 2003, 04:13:22 pm »
Question for anyone that has used a Playstation to PC USB adapter. I'm thinking about buying one for use with Mame v.62. The one I might buy is the EMS USB Controller Adapter from http://www.levelsix.com. What I'm asking is are there any issues with the Joy2Key program and multiple key button presses? I like playing Street Fighter type games in mame and would like to use some Playstation gamepads and want to try this adapter. Any help is appreciated.

well,
To begin with, radioshack converters works perfectly..some of the other converter have this nasty habit.

like you cant/can use digital pad.here goes...

say you get this one

http://www.levelsix.com/products/playstation/PSXPC_Adapter.shtml

and you press TAB to configure in mame and you have a digital pad hooked up to your converter and this converter will act like if someone was holding "DOWN" and wont let you configure your controls.
SO,all you do is get a dual shock controller and enable analog mode then configure your controls using dualshock pad then once done you will have the saved .CFG file and then you can hook you hacked digital pad and it will work.this problem is with this converter..

in the other hand, radio shack converters works best.you can use and digital pad and it works perfectly.I am not sure if i explained right you get the picture right?
That what i know from testing..i also have another one called "SMART JOY" adaptor i got locally and that one works perfectly too if you can locate one.
radio shack is still way to go because $10 for the radio shack one while the smart joy cost me $30 >:(.I was dumb enough to buy it because i really wanted to play and didnt wanna wait for some online order(could have been cheaper) and there was no radioshack converter at the time.

Yep, SNAAKE steered me to a USB adaptor from Radio Shack when I was having problems with my PS2/USB adaptor...Working great with the Shack stuff.

I have a pile of PSX/PS2 adapters. I use them primarily for Street Fighter variants. If you go with the LevelSix adapters such as the EMS or the Green one you have to keep in mind the D-Pad will map to button presses in windows as opposed to the X-Y axis. That may or may not be a big deal to you. You don't actually have to use the joy2key program if you're running windows 98+, the joystick shows up in the game controllers section without any separate driver install needed. You will be able to bind button presses in Mame/MAME32 directly to the controller. They work great.

As a warning I have ordered 6! of those green ones from LevelSix SNAAAKE posted and have only really been successful with 2 of them, 2 others were flakey and the other 2 completely dead. The guy running it was very uncooperative. The ones I have found that work the best with PSX controllers are the Boom variants carried by liksang. http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=55&products_id=605&PHPSESSID=43bdb9061c8e259e746d355019339987.

On a related note, I really really think we should put up a FAQ type post on the board. Make it sticky at the top, have it contain links to the various threads on the popular topics. The same questions: P360's, PSX/USB Adapters, Powering the Cab, Hacking a PSX/DC Pad, etc. come up all the time. I'd start one myself but last time I posted this idea it was deleted.

You ordered 6 of the same stuff? ???
and 2 worked and other 4 didnt ???..HOW ???

i seriouslly didnt have any problem with the green onces so i posted good stuff(before) but i didnt know that green one actually have other problems because at the time i had dual shock gamepad(had 2 laying around that i wanted to get rid off) hacked inside my joystick and now  in my new panel i got a digital pad and I myself am new to this weird problem.See my post above..i am trying to explain the situation with the green converter..green one is still all good if you have a dual shock pad laying around.so you can configure your buttons(first you have to enable your analog mode then configure) and then use your digital pad.

after all... the green converter dont have any problem like mtalkington had(that problem is way tooooo nasty and hard to put it in words but i knew what the problem was because i also had another converter that had same problem like cant play street fighter)...

Like "i cant do super moves in SFA 3" and people think you are a dumba$$ but its your converter thats causing the problem >:(.

Anyway....i like the idea of section where we can review converters and possibly other stuff too. :)

Thanks for the advice. The Playstation pad is starting to look like a good solution. From Snaaake's web page I see that they even make a Playstation to Dreamcast adapter. Maybe I'll pick up Dreamcast to play some Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

Sounds good. If you go that route I recommend the Innovation adapters from this thread (last post).

Well, it's not that exciting, but from what I can tell there were two versions of the SuperJoy's that LevelSix carries. The first version they sold supported PS1 controllers fine, that is D-Pad on the X/Y axis. Same with a DualShock with Analog off. If you hit the Analog button the D-Pad would switch to Buttons and the analog sticks would become the axis.

At some point the LevelSix adapters changed to where they behave the 2nd way with DualShock adapters w/ Analog on, but when you turn Analog off or plug in a PS1 controller, it bunks. If you're watching the Game Controllers panel the little + sign immediately hops to the lower right corner and nothing registers as moving the axis.

The people at a DDR fan site maintain a list of adapters and seem to confirm this theory.

My adapter story went like this:
1st: PSX/N64 (the purple one), worked great.
2nd: Another one, again all good.
3rd: First Green SuperJoy, works fine with PS1
4th: Second Green SuperJoy for a friend, completely dead. Email L6 twice, no response.
5th + 6th: A while goes by. Order 2 more Green ones for my briefcase project. One of them works fine for PS1 controllers, other does not.
7th: Rather than dealing with customer support, I assume I have another dead one and just order another. Comes in, also not working. At this point I find out that it is a revision 2. Contact LevelSix multiple times, finally get a response saying they've been sending emails but they probably got lost. Start trying to get them to exchange just one of the Rev 2's for a Rev 1 if they have it.
8th: Meanwhile I order one of the Boom ones from Lik-Sang. It comes in, works great. Finally levelsix agrees to exchange an adapter for me, I send it back and never hear from them or receive another one again.

Yeah I agree with everyone here, the radio shack ones are the best, I have had no troubles so far. I saw 2 left at the local one and picked them up for $9.95 a piece then just the other day I went back and say them for $6.95. I don't know why the price dropped but who cares they work great and they are cheap. Thanx.

This site is a faq. Perhaps if someone were to document and organize the information contained in these posts it could be added to the console or the controller section depending on where its relevant. We can't add a sticky topic for every different discussion.

I meant one sticky post that acts as a table of contents so to speak.

...

*shrug* Whatever, I don't care, I'm just trying to help out new people coming to the board. I've seen it done elsewhere and it works pretty well.

Don't let me shut you down just because I would be against the idea. You could always suggest it to the moderators. There is a forum dedicated to that very thing. They may not be aware of your suggestion, I don't think they read every thread. You could even take a poll, recently the polling feature was turned on. If you could get enough support for it the moderators might be convinced.

I don't like it because you would have to scroll past the sticky topics to get to the new messages. Who's going to choose which topics are sticky worthy? Someone would also have to constantly maintain those sticky threads. Your going to end up with threads that are huge because people would keep replying to them diluting the usefull information. The information would not be compiled or filtered for validity.

The basis of this site is a faq. Many people are to lazy to even check it before posting a question here. Its actually quite annoying especially when its a newbie. I want to encourage new members but I hate questions that say "I decided to build a cab where do I buy the parts and which parts should I buy". A lot of time and energy is put into building and updateing the faq and people are to lazy to use it. People are also quick to complain about the faq missing sections that are important to them but few of those people step up to write content that could be added. Perhaps you could compile the information in the threads that are important to you and either submit it as content to this site or host it somewhere and submit a link to it to be added to the faq.
