New PC Act-Labs light gun won't calibrate. Help!
« on: October 25, 2005, 04:23:39 pm »
Hi, I recently bought the new model USB PC Light Gun from Act-Labs for use with MAME. For some strange reason I can't get it to work right. When I use the calibration switch to calibrate the gun, the bottom 2/3 of the screen turns dark grey, the top 1/3 turns white. When I switch back to normal mode the gun shoots all over the screen and is highly inaccurate. The calibration screen is suppose to go all white. It will only calibrate accurately within the white area.
But I can't get the whole screen to go white on calibration. In or out of MAME.

I have spoken with the Tech Support at Act Labs. They have given me several suggestions, nothing has worked. They assure me that my monitor and video card are compatible. I know the gun works because I hooked it up to a couple of friends systems and it worked fine. There is something wrong with my hardware/software setup.

I've tried everything in the troubleshooting section in the manual that was sent plus everything on-line. I switched resolution, interlacing on the graphics card, refresh rates, etc, etc.
I don't know what else to do!!

Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Any suggestions? Please help.  ???

My system specs are:
Athlon XP 2600+
GeForce 4 Ti 4600; 128mgs Ram
21" Viewsonic G810 Graphics Series Monitor (CRT, VGA compatible)
768 Mgs DDR 333 Ram
Windows XP Professional
DirectX 9.0c

Thanks.

Wade's case is different, our Tech guy told me that he already got the new VGA box and it still does not work, can anyone out there with G810 monitor and  GeForce 4 Ti 4600 confirm that the new VGA work for you?

Yes, It's true. Act-Labs already replaced my VGA box and then sent a whole new gun/box set. I've had problems thoughout the whole process but have tried to be patient... because I want this thing to work! I want a working light gun!!

The second VGA box was worse than the first. Completely defective. I couldn't even get a monitor signal through it. The less-than-standard components of the VGA boxes was explained to me. A new set was then shipped.

I was told that the last gun/box set they sent was thoughly tested before it was sent. That's the set I tested on two friend computers. It seemed to work perfectly on their older monitors/computers. On mine, however, I still can't get it to calibrate (see 1st post).

I read the entire thread posted above. Thank you. While I didn't see a solution, at least I know I'm not alone with this issue.
Could it be that because my monitor is a Aperture grille, it doesn't work? Actually I think my monitor is a "Shadow Mask" monitor. Is that the same? Or is it a video card issue?

I spent last night doing more "tweaking" to figure this out. I ended up really messing my system up. Thank goodness for "System Restore".

I don't know what else to do. I guess I'll just have to e-mail "Alex Pui" at Act Labs back again and tell him to start the Return/refund process for my 3 VGA boxes and 2 light guns.

If anyone else out there has any ideas or thoughts, I'm all ears.
Thanks again.
