who likes Dremel tools?
« on: October 24, 2005, 08:25:48 pm »
So, I'm going shopping for things I need to work on my machine again because it's been awhile.  And I realized, I don't own my favorite tool.  The Dreminator.   :) Last time I was doing a lot of work on my cabinet, I remember defaulting to trying to do whatever I wanted with that little Dremel tool.  Do you guys use these things?  I probably need cut back on using mine.

How do you not own the favorite tool you defaulted to using all the time?

And stop calling it the "dreminator".  I'm afraid that'll be the name of your cab or something ;)

I use my dremel for everything.  Matter of fact, I just used it on sunday to carve a pumpkin!  It worked pretty well for the small parts (teeth) but other than that it was pretty useless.  :P
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I have owned three of those things. Keep burning out weak (but zippy) motors. I guess I'm more of a chainsaw sort of guy.

I can't think of any jobs for a dremel in cab construction. I guess you could polish button holes or something.

They are very useful at times, but I wouldn't say essential.  I have never had a time that I couldn't get around not having one by using something else.

I bought my dad one for his birthday tho, just in case ;)

Dremels rock! I would recommend getting the wired version though. It's always a pain in the arse to run out of battery charge when you want to finish a job.

One can never have too many tools.

I'm a dremel lover (yes, opening myself up for all the cheap shots) and even used mine to do the slot cutting on my first cab for t-molding but have shifted to router since that experience. I got it done but that was the only area I can think of where the dremel came in handy during construction. It was definitely a go slow process.

I use is in alot of other areas for little mods to computer/project cases, sawing off nail heads, bolt cutting, small sanding jobs,  etc etc.

I just used my dremel to grind down the tops of some LEDs in my Twilight Zone pinball, to help better diffuse the light.

Man, I love my dremel...here's a funny/weird story: I used my dremel to saw off my wedding ring!

Yikes on the Wedding Ring Incident!

But yeah, I love my Dremel.  It doesn't have a ton of uses in general cabinet construction, but it can help you out of jams more often than not.  I *did* use mine on my cabinet for a bit of detailed shaping.

By far the most useful item on my Dremel is a good cut-off wheel.

I'm thinking of saving a few $$$ and using my dremel to perform some dentistry on myself. With the extension attached it looks and sounds just like a dentists drill. How hard can it be?

They make a little router attachment for it that is nice for doing really precise work, like if you wanted to flush mount something like a track ball mounting plate.
I used mine with the router attachment to flush mount the plates for the joysticks (I top mounted and put overlay over them) because I didn't have a regular router then. It was a bit time consuming but very easy to make exact cuts.

yeah time consuming. I think it's tougher to get a nice strait line with such a small bit, though, so I prefer a real router for routing.

I has come in handy, though.

I recently made a gate for our front porch and used the dremel plus the router attachement to mortice the hinges.  Worked like a champ.  Love that tool.

Oh, an also a few months back my neighbor had some knucklehead install a fence between our properties.  After he was finished there were 100's of nail points sticking through facing my yard.  Nice.  The dremel and a few metal cutting wheels did the trick in a snap.

(Of course I dumped all the nail-heads in the contractor's driveway...)

:)

You dremeled 100s of nail heads?

I would have just hamered them back out :D

I used the router attachment to do some door hinges & latch holes for my front door when I redid it. Easier than using a real router on that one.

I have discovered that the easiest way to get over-long nails out of a neighbor-built privacy fence is gasoline and matches. You do have to walk the crime scene with a magnet to pick up the nails.

I recommend the wired version.  The battery on mine, even when it was new, always drained before it was done.  Often, I just take the dremmel bits, and put them in my regular drill.

Heh...nah, I'm not going to be that petty. I have gained weight since I had my back surgery, as I can't walk very well and have a doctor-imposed 25 lb. weight lift limit. I'm 220 and 6', so I prefer to think of myself as husky.

Just a heads up for you guys...

I had a motor burn out on one of my dremels that was out of warranty. I sent it in to their repair center with a nice letter asking them to fix it and call me with an amount for the repair. Well I never got a call and they just replaced the motor for free and sent it back. Awesome customer service!

Of course they did, the call would have cost them more than the worth of the replacement motor. ;)
