quick question about comp molex
« on: October 23, 2005, 12:55:00 pm »
Is there any way to tell which have +5v and which are carrying +12v without using a multimeter (ie visual or what its attached to?)  Also, I have an ipaq4 and I'm using 360 opticals, I just hook up the +5v wire to the computers power supply and the ground to the common ground spot on the ipaq?

You might already know this but you can get your +5 right off of your IPAC4.

The standard is RED -> 5v  YELLOW -> 12v

But I always check first, because you never REALLY know without testing.

Either ground should work, but I would (and did) connect both 5v and ground to the Ipac.

how do I connect the 5v to the ipaq?  All I see is that header pin but no ways to connect it?

If you have an old CD-ROM cable that is used to connect the audio pins of the CD-ROM drive to the soundcard you can use that.  If you have an old computer case, you can cut loose one of the motherboard connectors (like Reset, Power, H.D.D., LED) and use that.

The spacing of the pins on that header is the same as the pin spacing on a Hard Drive, Motherboard pin header, etc., so any connector that will fit on those can be modified to work on the Ipac header.

If you don't have any of those available then just connect them to the PC power supply.  The red wire is 5v and the black wire closest to it is ground.
