sortinfo is a very useful way of deciding on what you acually 'need' in you control panel.

I always just export the whole list from sortinfo into excel - you can do a lot more with it there.

If it's the tool I've used in the past, it parses the output of a mame with
a certain command line argument, and shows an excel like table with
all kinds of information for each game.  What fields are shown can be
modified IIRC.

Nice little utility.  Becareful with the results, though.  It parses the information from the mame -listinfo command, and MAME isn't exactly accurate when it comes to control configurations.  MAME categorizes Galaga as having an 8-way joystick (it is really a 2-way!).

All 2ways come up like that in mame.  A liitle flaw in they didn;t make a bit pattern for 2ways.

There are quite a few more errors other than the 2-ways from what I understand, I just used that as an example.  If you follow RGVAC, then you will seem them talk about the MAME inaccuracy errors like this from time to time.

There wouldn't be a need for the controls.dat project if it worked perfectly

It seems like the controls.dat would be a good reference if Mame were updated to be correct, though.
