"My car won't start, please help!".  <-- Questions like these are impossible to answer without details.  There are a million and one missing pieces of information

1) What operating system are you using?
2) What blitter are you using?
3) What video card and drivers are you using?
4) What monitor are you using?
5) What resolution are the games running at that are not working?
6) What front end are you using?
7) What sort of stretch or other post-filtering are you using?

Answer a few of those and we can get started on sorting you out.

pentium 3 800 mhz, 256 meg ram.
(1) im using windows xp
(2) not sure what a blitter is??
(3) video card is a voodoo fx 32mb card (but using a 256mb card on my normal pc and some games are still not full screen on that pc in vertical mode)
(4) im using a 19 inch crt pc monitor
(5) and not sure how check what resoluton the games are playing at?
(6) im using MALA front end with mame 080
(7) and not sure what you mean by-->What sort of stretch or other post-filtering are you using?
but i have this enabled in mala--> resolution is on auto, screen aspect ratio is 4:3, and clean stretch is auto.
some games play full screen on my cocktail cabinet and some games are smaller in the middle of the screen, all help much appreciated.

It might be due to the restricted aspect ratio.
NO MORE!!

Hard-set the resolution, aspect ratio, cleanstretch and hardware stretch.  The "auto" settings are what's changing things on you.

Could it be that some games are oviented vertically (e.g. Donkey Kong) on your horizontal monitor?
