Anyone have the Ms Pacman/Galaga replacement stick?
« on: January 17, 2003, 09:36:44 am »
The description states that it's a Super body.
Is the actuator identical to the super? My super in 4 way mode isn't very effective.

Is this a proper 4 way stick? Does it work flawlessly as a 4 way?

I don't have one, but I've played it in the arcade.  It feels really nice, and I plan to use them in my upcoming cocktail project.

According to Bob Roberts, http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/redball.html, they have a diamond cutout.

I have had one for about 6-9 months. It is the GREATEST joystick. I play mostly old school games and it is PERFECT. Games like Donkey Kong and Ms Pac Man rock. The only problem is that it is a short stick. You will have to route your cp or make a plate like I had a friend of mine do for me.

How's the throw on it?  I got one of those sticks from ultimarc to dedicate as 4-way, but the throw is too long.

Or order a mounting plate from OSCAR ;-) The short stick makes it nice and tight and the actuator is NOT the same as the Supers - you simply cannot get a diagonal to register, no matter how hard you try.

Since it doesn't have the mounting plate, why not get the happ's "Pacman original"? http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/506084112.htm

Well, woodworking is my thing.... I can route that puppy out no problem!  ;)

I didn't realize Oscar made a mounting plate for these joysticks... Thats an option too, but I'll probably just route it out. It'll be slightly higher that way (the thickness of the steel higher heh) Sounds like a good little joystick. I was considering the j sticks because the shaft is longer but I had heard complaints about the long throw as well.

Thanks guys, I'll be getting one tonight on my way home from work.

One other question...

Does the ball screw on or is it more solidly mounted?

It looks to be solid as far as I can tell.

My impression of it, bought it a couple weeks ago:

Feels great, but you're going to have to do extra work to mount it comfortably (very short shaft). Don't worry about it being like the super in 4 way, it works perfect. It is very stiff, I imagine the more you yank around on the thing the looser it will become. Ball top is not removeable.

Don't get me started on prices again but...funny thing about the Pac replacements -- for $64.30 they look to be the same exact thing as the Ms Pac replacements ($21.45), but with the addition of a stamped metal mounting plate that puts the shaft at a shallower depth and that has the holes drilled at the proper locations for an original Pac CP.  What a bargain for an extra $42.85...  :P

Free resource for building your own rotating control panels!

My other job...

Yeah, no kidding. No thanks. I'm all set to route out a recess to mount from the top. I'm actually going to go to the trouble of removing that plastic lip that goes all the way around the top face of the joystick. Not so much to increase the height (although that won't hurt) but to allow my control panel overlay to sit flat and not wrinkle around the 4 way. I'll only be losing 1/8" of overall joystick height because of the lexan but I've probably gained that back from removing the plastic lip. It's a bit of work but it will look great when i'm done. Doing this kind of stuff is my favorite part of the project anyways.  :)

I should have the highest Pacman stick possible!  ;D
