OK I am cleaning up a star wars yoke, putting it back together with some spare parts that the seller included when I bought the yoke. The up/down axis pot and gears seem to be fine (however I'll need to hook new wires up). However, the left/right axis is not right.
I have installed the pot on this axis and rotated the yoke clockwise (CW) until the hard metal limit stop was reached (approx. 90 degrees to the right). I then turned the pot to its mechanical limit in the appropriate direction and installed the gear. Now when I rotate the yoke the other direction (CCW), the mechanical limit of the pot (delicate) is reached a little bit before the limit stop of the actual yoke (durable). When the limit of the pot is reached, there is about 1/4" between the yoke stops. This is far from ideal as I see this scenario trashing the pot eventually.
So as far as I can guess, either:
1) the pot has not enough rotational ability (were multi-turn pots ever used on yokes?)
2) the limit stops on the yoke are in the wrong places for some reason
3) the gears happen to mesh beautifully but are the wrong gears and hence the pot is turning at too fast a gear ratio
4) there should be some kind of thick (rubber?) bumper on the yoke limit stops that would reduce the overall range of motion of the yoke (right now it is 2 thick metal pins that strike each other when the limit is reached). Thick enough that it would make up the 1/4" difference.
