Happs Replacement Joystick for Pac-Man
« on: October 06, 2005, 01:09:29 pm »
I am looking for a 4 way that is good for Pac-Man and Galaga games. I saw this "Replacement Joystick for Original Pac-Man Games" at Happs and thought that might be the best bet.

Does any one no anything about these? What about mounting to a wooding control panel?
Thanks
Glenn

That joystick is meant for a 1/8" metal cp.  HOWEVER, do NOT buy that joystick, mount it in MDF and get a replacement stick from groovygear as someone else suggested to me.  What you end up with is a stick that is TOO LONG.  I found out the hard way.

What I did is routed a bit deeper...I have 3/4" mdf and I probably routed to almost half an inch.  Some might say I'm risking it, but it gives the perfect length on the stick and I had a friend of mine come over and beat the hell out of it in Ms Pac Man and it help up fine.

if you don't want to deal with all that, then don't get that joystick.  It IS a nice joystick however....

The replacement sticks were designed to be usable on 3/4 wood with a 1/8" laminate.  To shorten the stick, use spacers between the base and the underside of the panel.

It's easier to make it shorter without sacrificing structure than the other way around.  ;)

I thought of doing it that way, but I wasn't just concerned with the distance between the ball and the top of the CP, but also the THROW of the joystick.  If you use a spacer then less of the joystick will stick out of the top, but it's still the same long throw...and it just didn't feel right.

This is true.  The best bet would be a metal mounting plate.

I have some reservations about thinning out MDF beyond 1/2".  Plywood you might be able to get away with, but MDF is pretty unforgiving.
