What do you guys think about powdercoating?
« on: September 30, 2005, 05:47:25 am »
I was interested in buying a powdercoating gun from sears and I have just one question--Is it safe to bake the coated item in your oven @ 400 degrees that you usually cook your food in?  I am a little scared about powdercoating a CP, then after its done, cook up some pizza in the same oven.  What's your opinion?

 Are you married?

If yes, you must never speak of this again. It's for your own protection ;)

no its not safe. Best bet is if you have a large enough building or garage to get a used cheap oven and use it STRICTLY for that, never bake something inside after powder coating.

Another thing you may run into with this is that it may be difficult to get the stuff to cure properly without having it hanging during the curing process.
If it's in contact with anything (rack/tray/etc...) while curing, that part of the powdercoat may get messed up.

Most industrial powdercoaters hang the stuff, then spray it, and then run the entire rack through curing.
That way they don't have to handle it with uncured powder on it.

Do one of two things:

Buy a cheap powder coat oven from a place like Harbor Freight or

Grab a used one that someone is giving away when they replace theirs.

BTW, ELECTRIC ONLY!  No open flames around this stuff.
