Hooking up a coin mechanism
« on: September 28, 2005, 07:32:21 pm »
Hi, I'm new to this site but i have a Ghost N' Goblins arcade game that we have been trying to get rid off but we are not having any luck... but in the mean time we want to install the coin mechanism. Right now the game has the coin door but the wires just are not hooked up, I would really appreciate if someone could tell me how to do this because i am completely confused. ???

If you are trying to get rid of it, let us know where you are ... someone may be interested.

As for the coin mechanism, can you post some pictures ? Are there mechs (the part that sorts whether the coin is appropriate or not) installed and you just want to connect the wires ?

Cheers.

I was actually hoping for closeup pictures of the coin mechs and wires.

Basically, you just have to connect the common ground wire to the ground prong on the microswitches, then the coin1 wire and coin2 wire to the appropriate NO prongs (e.g. P1 wire to P1 switch). I wanted pictures so that I could make a reasonable guess as to which wire is which.

There may also be wires for a coin counter to be connected.

I am guessing that this isn't much help to you, but hard to do much more when working blind.

You might also want to change the Subject of this thread to mention wiring coin mechanisms ... you might get more eyes on your question.

Cheers.

OK -- I can't see a coin counter, so we'll jsut look at the mechs. Beneath each of the mechs, there should be a microswitch with a wire attached. When the coin is dropped in, it should fall through and move the wire, momentarily activating the switch.

On each switch, there are probably three prongs -- one for ground (COM), one for normally open (NO) and one for normally closed (NC). Ignore NC.

I can't see any wires in the pictures -- how many are there and what colours are they (although colours can be deceiving, it is somewhere to start) ?

Cheers.

OK ... that's a bit different ... if you open up the back and look inside, there should be a wiring harness that the PCB (board) is plugged into. From there, wires will run to the monitor, the controls and power. ARe there any wires connected to the harness that are just hanging loose (e.g. not connected to anything) ?

I would advise doing this with the machine powered down ...

Cheers.

EDIT: There appear to have been two different types of GnGoblins boards ... one with spots for two coin mechs at pins 18/V with seperate coin grounds at 19/W ... according to the manual, those would have two gray wires at 18/V and two black wires at 19/W. The other type has a single coin spot at 18 with a pink wire (again, colours can be misleading), but nothing at 19.

On the harness, is there a wire at pin 18?

18 is on the parts side of the board (e.g. not the side that only has solder on it). 8 is where the key (e.g. gap) is. There are 2 sets of 28 pins (1 for each side of the board).

Cheers.

OK ... now the fun  :-[  part ... you need to trace these wires back to the PCB and make note of which pin they connect to (should be a number between 1 and 28 / parts side or solder side).

From that, we should be able to tell which wire to connect where ... and that's 95% or the battle.

Cheers.

After the first time, it gets easier ... is really tough to do without experience with only remote instructions.

Did you make any progress with the folks in the chat room ?

Are there wires anywhere near the coin door?  Any of them have quick connects on them?  They look like the opposite of the little tabs on the switches on the coin door, and slip right over them.

Peale -- I think that this machine at one point had a coin door harness, but it is no longer there.

My advice to mag48 was to trace each wire backto the board and note the pin number (I provided him with a copy of the manual and pinouts).

Cheers.

Ah, now I see.  That's exactly what he's going to have to do.  Get in there with a flashlight and find the answer for yourself.  Since we're not in front of the cabinet, we can't do it for you.

And no, don't pull that connector off.

Also, since the wires are likely color-coded, you can likely just look on the connector on the main board to see which wires are for coin.

C'mon mag, you have do do SOME of the work ... you haven't answered the question about the colour of the wires leading to that white block. And you really SHOULD trace the wires from the white block back to the harness and note what pin number they are.

At this point, it isn't hard, just a pain to track the wires back ... grab a flashlight, open up the back and get in there.

Cheers

no not really... this is so hard!!

This thread is so painful to read.  CheffoJeffo has a lot of patience.  Personally I can't stand working with people who refuse to even attempt to do any of the work themselves.

Mag48, nobody in this forum can reach through their monitor to fix your machine for you.  He provided you with instructions, a manual, and pinouts.  Figure it out!  You have everything you need.  Bet you haven't read one word of the manual yet.  And by the style of your typing (lack of punctuation, no caps, AOL-speak) you are most likely 14-years old, so I guess I'm not surprised.

Not really.

It is part penance for ripping on a couple of newbies (sorry, to Joystick Jerk and tribalredfox) and part karma-whoring (the day after this thread started I got a dedicated Asteroids).
