HVLP Painting, equipment needed?
« on: September 28, 2005, 11:05:36 am »
I've been looking around at hvlp sprayers, what is the most inexpensive way to get into a setup?

I need a sprayer and compressor. The problem I see is that most of the need LOTS of air to function.

example..

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=7902

Quote
# 40 PSI max.
# Average air consumption: 10 CFM

And most of the compressors are.

Quote
120V, 4HP (peak), 3HP (rated,) 3400 RPM, Air delivery: 4.5 SCFM @ 115 PSI; 5.6 SCFM @ 90PSI; 6.25 SCFM @ 70 PSI; 7.2 SCFM @ 40 PSI; Auto shutoff @ 115 PSI; Restart @ 85 PSI

So the max that this compressor seems to output is only 7.2 cfm.

Am I reading this wrong?

Help..

Thanks.

Later,

I have a Campbell Hausfeld 2050 HVLP sprayer.

I have read favorable reports on this one:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=91772

It is cheap enough, and no compressor is needed. I do not have any personal experience though, so YMMV.

You could also try a local body shop supply store (maybe even an auto parts store depending). They should have reasonably priced guns and should be able to direct you to the right compressor solution.

I work for a auto parts distributor in ohio, and I know our refinishing centers sell lower cost guns and sell compressors, quality though I'm unsure of. I've only used SATA and Devilbiss guns

If you go the route of compressed air you may want to look into a "condensate seperator".  Otherwise you may have condensation (water) comming out with the paint which would not be so good for the finish.
