Maybe one (or both) of the middle pins is not making a good contact. I can't remember OTTOMH how Randy calls the pins in his docs, but for each axis there's the 'D' (direction) pin, then value pins 'A', 'B', & 'C' (sometimes labeled 1, 2, & 3). I'm talking about one of the 'B' pins not making contact.
Not sure why
both axes were effected, but I couldn't go in either of the cardinal directions when my 49-way had 9 of the ten pins connnected, with only one of the axes' B pins not. However the pattern was a little different on what won't work: (IIRC OTTOMH)
33xxx33
x22x22x
xx1x1xx
xxx0xxx
xx1x1xx
x22x22x
33xxx33
'x's not working. My Y axis middle pin was not making contact. Notice the differences between the Y axis & X axis not working.
I know it's not the same pattern, but try reconnecting the middle pins (one at a time so not to disconnect one at the same time you connect the other

).
