Atari Volcano Switches & iPAC

I tried to light my Atari Volcano switch last night with the raw +5v from the iPAC's keyboard LED supply.  It was bright for about 5 seconds, then it got dimmer and dimmer, and then really bright... and popped like a party favor.

Smelled bad too.  

Reading the side of it for the first time (after ruining it of course), I noticed it says "Max +-2v" so, I assume I should've tried a 2v source instead.  Oh well, I guess it'll just be un-lit forever like they have been up til now.

The Atari arcade games powered the LED's with +5V and a 330 ohm resistor.  Without the resistor, as you now know, burns up the LED.   :(

There are a few guys on RGVAC that will replace the LED for next to nothing.  Just post a message there looking for somebody to repair it.

The reason I tried this particular volcano switch, was that the switch part was flakey (intermittent) anyhow.  I'll try to replace it, unless they can be cleaned or something.

Were you using the 10pin header, or the leads for P1 button 7/8? Ive got the same atari buttons but havent cleaned them up enough to use em yet

Andy does have a drawing for hooking up leds from the I-PAC on part of his site (near the bottom of the page).  He shows 220 ohm resistors in series with the leds and they seem to work just fine with my volcano buttons.  Below is the picture:
