N64 to joystick port? or USB?
« on: January 12, 2003, 06:05:31 am »
I'm completely new to all of this stuff. This is probably not possible, but is there a way to make an N64 controller work in a joystick port or USB? Something I can build myself, that is. I've seen things for the parallel port, but nothing for this, so I assume it's not going to work.

I know I could buy an adapter (probably USB right?), but I'd rather not...

The N64 is one  of the most difficult controllers to interface.
Afaik nobody has interfaced it to the J-stick port .
Your best options are.

* buy a usb adapter
* build the parralel port adapter (difficult)
* forget N64 and build the PSX parallel adapter (easy)

I went with the last option  and built a pair of  psx controller
adapters. These were very easy to build,I can plug and unplug them from the front of my cab, and it only took about 2 hours to build both of them. They were also very
cheap ,I think they cost about $7 each and that includes a $4 extention cable. I use them with the nes/snes emulators
and they work great. I don't run any N64 emus but I'm sure they would be fine.

                                    Good luck

I have a couple of the N64 -> USB adapters and they work great. http://www.levelsix.com/products/playstation/pcusbadapter.shtml. They're pretty cheap and fairly unintrusive for what it's worth.

I own 2 Adaptoids.

It works great but isn't cheap.

I have never heard any good things about the PSX/N64 adapters but I haven't tried them myself.

I would buy one rather than build one as the paralell (sp?) port isn't all that fast and you would only be limited to 1 controller.
