Vantage updates?
« on: September 21, 2005, 09:29:37 am »
I am just inquiring as to the status of the Vantage project. Who is working on this if at all? Where to go to find out any updates on Vantage? is there a Vantage forum somewhere or user group?

Hi,
I was working on Vantage using a borrowed PC that I had to return, and I no longer an environment to work on Vantage.

To be honest not sure how much interest there is on Vantage at this stage. keep thinking that it would be more interesting to add additional games to MAME .36 (and/or improve the emulation)

One feature that I have seen requested on here (myself included) or at least inquired on is saving high scores. What kind of PC hardware do you need to do your development work?

Another is more ROM support.
I for one think Vantage is a very cool app, and one that is used by many arcade enthusiasts for classic machines which are becominb more popular, and being able to use such outdated hardware makes it very reasonable to set up.

1 vote  from me! Long live Vantage!!!

I think there's definitely interest in the application.  Just needs more people dedicated toward both adding new drivers, and working on drivers that don't currently work.

Dig Dug comes to mind.  It's in the source, but currently not enabled because it doesn't do diddly.  Same with (IIRC) Super Zaxxon.

Wouldn't improving the emulation on .36 just be doing what .37, .38, etc, etc did?

Personally I think what would be better is a .55 based bugfix/speed hack project. .55 has the vast majority of games people want to play. Fix the few nagging problems, maybe add a few speedhacks because WE don't care about accurate emulation, and boom, a great version is born.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Sounds like Mame v1.0!

Not really (on the mame .36 additions).  They added a bunch of features since then that slow down all games (color depth stored was a big one...)  But they could take some of the older games which just emulated and try to add them to .36 and start a new thread.

IE and optimized for old computer version of mame.

but in doing it... you will loose a lot of the nice newer more accurate additions.  (robotron for one)

But a cool project none the less.   But for the amount of time to do a lot of this, you could get a minimum wage job and take the money to buy a newer motherboard and just use v0.100+

Old computer I guess, running windows 98 (needs to be networked)
I was having problem running vantage on my Computer because apparetnly it was too new. Looks like we can now get around this (-x parameter memory manager), But I haven't tried to set it up on my PC.

I don't think there is much that can easily be added to Vantage (other than the few mentioned by Peale).

That is why I was thinking of mame .36 since it can also un on very old hardware.

What Lilwolf Said mostly.  There are a bunch of CPU cores that have been added since .36, What I'm talking about mainly is adding games to existing drivers, and maybe fix a bug or two.

I guess .55 is for Windows, but .36 would be for DOS

All the games currently in VAntAGE are Z80 games.  Centipede would be nice to add, since it's certainly a vertical classic, but it runs off a 6502.  Be interesting to see a 6502 added, with speed hacks.

Sounds like getting work done on .36 is a more viable option. So all this talk is making me think its maybe just all talk? What would take this to happen? How do we start out a project like that?

You find a programmer that is interested in doing this and offer him large ammounts of money.
No idea where the you guys are just talk came from, but I do resent it.
Good luck with the project.

It wasnt my intention for that message to come off that way. I am sorry you were offended. I just am not sure how a project like this gets steam and gets completed? Can modifications be made to Mame .36 without Mame devs involvement? i dont know the answer. I didnt think that a few messages talking about modifying a version of mame woudl be enough for somebody to devote time to it. I am sure like me you have other professional interests and time is money. I understand that completely. I am a professional VB.net programmer myself. I am just not sure of any legalities with modificiations of the mame code... My apologies..
