Joystick lubrication?
« on: September 21, 2005, 04:08:00 am »
(Come on now, don't make fun of the topic  ;D

I have an original Pac-man 4-way joystick which rubs in the diamond-restricted corners.  It kind of throws off play.  Not sure if I cleaned off grease that needed to be there, but now I need to add some proper slipperyness to fix it.  What's good for ths purpose?  I heard WD40 leaves behind gummy residue (and it smells!)  Any suggestions?

WD40 is not a lubricant and should never be confused for one.  As to your specific problem, I'm sure someone will respond accordingly.

Try a food grade silicone lubricant in an aerosol pack. Good brands like Dow Corning are non staining and completely clear in colour. Just make sure you wipe away any excess lubricant from your joystick, you don't want your hand slipping off when you are really going for it and are about to beat that high score.

I use silicone spray almost exclusively on stuff like this.
Unlike most lubricants, it won't eat rubber.
It works especially well on plastic-to-plastic contact.

For heavier items, like steering wheels, I use general purpose lithium grease.
That has a little better staying power; but will gum up things like joysticks, and cause them not to return to center properly.

As far as the smell goes, silicone spray is probably the worst for "stinking up the house"--at least according to my wife.

Hmmm.  Well silicone is a carcinogen but I guess I can spray it outside.  I think I actually still have some from when I was trying to fix some computer fans.

I gotta remember not to take things out of context.

What about powdered graphite?  Not sticky, no smell, won't attract dust.

Well the women with leaky breast implants would disagree profusely with the assertion that silicone is safe.  That said, it's certainly fine to spray a little on a joystick when used properly.  I would just advise people to minimize contact with it when possible.

I work for the food industry in manufacturing and engineering. You can believe me that FDA silicone lubricant is completely safe for humans. This is why it is FDA approved.

Boob implants have absolutely nothing to do with silicone based lubricants and the fact is placing any foreign substance inside ones body next to vital organs is probably gunna cause reasons for alarm.

I trust the FDA about as far as I can throw their entire review panel with one hand.

Silicone implants cause systemic sickness.  Anyway I'm tired of pointless arguments on this board where no one listens.

Wake up to yourself man. You asked a question and were presented with facts and suggestions free of charge, just because you choose not to believe or research them doesn't make the world bad.

In short, grow up or shut up.

Exposure levels are the key here.

Sodium, Chlorine and Potassium are highly toxic too--but you can't live without them.

Silicone implants cause systemic sickness.
Which has NOTHING to do with cancer.

Carcinogens cause cancer.

Anyways, there's a diffrence between short-term contact/inhalation and long-term implantation.
What's perfectly safe for one use is often downright dangerous for the other.

FDA approved a lot of stuff that shouldn't.  Like Sucralose.  I don't place a lot of stock in FDA approval.

Damn, high quality snorkels are made of silicon and I don't hear about divers getting mouth cancer. Sand is made of silicon and I don't hear about beach bums with foot cancer. It's a case of taking things to the extreme where they no longer have any meaning.

Sand=Silicon.  Snorkels=Silicone (with an "e")

Don't confuse them as they are not the same.

That being said, I trust silicone more than PVC, but you couldn't pay me to ingest that Splenda crap  :D

Sand is mostly silicon dioxide (SiO2) rather than pure silicon.

Apply that to yourself.  I never asked about the safety of silicone, since I already know.  Go research it.  You just argue to argue.  And I already thanked those who made suggestions that helped.

Lube with bacon grease.  No cancer, just clogged arteries.  Plus your joystick will smell bacony.

You need to review the post and think about what was said. Your stupid remark which was, "Anyway I'm tired of pointless arguments on this board where no one listens.  All the info is freely available on the net." was the provoking factor in my comments. Up until then I was being helpful and answered your original post as best I thought, go on have a look. See if you can muster the intelligence to comprehend what was said and the way it was said. You will see it was not an attack of any kind towards you.

But then, well
