How do I assemble this slot cutter?
« on: September 16, 2005, 11:52:55 pm »
Just got this in today from MCLS.  It's the standard 1/16" slotcutter that seems to be popular for the t-molding cuts.  Can anybody tell me how this goes together?  There were no directions included.

Thx,

oops, forgot to add that there's also a single nut included to hold everything together.

On mine  you first insert a shim (washer), then the cutter, then another shim, then the bearing, then a few more shims and finally add the nut.  Make sure you put the cutter on correctly so the teeth cut with the direction the router is spinning.

Cool, thx for the info guys.  There seems to be a conflict between what's posted here and in that other thread.  Are the washers supposed to go both sides of the bearing, or on both sides of the cutter?  I'm guessing it probably doesn't make too much difference.

I've got one that came pre-assembled.  The washers are on both sides of the bearing (like the Zod thread).  Closer to the nut there is two washers on mine, so it would be 1,2,3,4,7,7,6.

Wow, I never imagined that a Zod post would actually add anything meaningful to the forums!  :D

I posted a pic of the assembly in this post.

Make sure that the blade is not put on upside down. If it is, the cutter will smoke like crazy when cutting, and it will ruin the cutter if used this way for long.

Quote from the other thread

"... its bearing, washer, cutter, washer, nut. This might help others get a picture in their mind"

So opinions are still varying on the proper placement for the washers.  It's pretty clear that the bit works either way, so I'm not going to stress out about it.

Ohhhhhh.... that's why......  Turns out I had it on backwards.  Good thing I was doing quick "test" cuts on spare wood before going "live" with it.

Ah well, I'll just somehow have to live with myself anyway.

Zakk, I know you'll somehow overcome all the obstacles in your way and get on with your life! ;D  Yoo kon dooo eeeeet!

's ok, he's said worse to me.  I was called a troublemaker, told of a wish that I didn't even exist here, told I've never made a worthwhile contribution, and only contribute drek.

There was mention of me being a hero, but I'm sure it wasn't meant with all the love and respect he reserves for someone who proved to be a blatant racist on these boards, something he proved so convincingly that it got him banned from here.

Zakk, I'll take your version of "taste" in your jokes any day over someone defending a racist and general ignoramus like Zod showed himself to be.

Poor taste!  ::)
