Road Blasters settings for Dual Strike
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:47:54 pm »
Anyone have any luck getting Road Blasters to work with a Star Wars yoke hooked up to a Dual Strike Hack?  I've played around with the analog settings with no luck.

Have you enabled joystick input?  Don't forget that game used optics originally so it is a 'dial' game...

Is the sidewinder steering wheel optical or pots?  I think Road Blasters used an optical steering wheel and that is the problem.
RoadBlasters did use an optical steering wheel.
An optical steering wheel that MAME treats as a spinner knob.

Correct, but a Sidewinder is pot-based so it should work with any joystick device.  I've heard before a lot of people use pot-based steering wheels, with good results.  I am yet to try this tho, I've been using my 360deg wheel for now...

Having examined the underside of one it IS a spinner knob, just with limited movement.

Totally irrelevant here but I noticed while taking my RoadBlaster controller apart the other day that the thumb buttons are quite different to the Star Wars ones.  Seems to be an improved design so they have less 'wobble'.  I was going to fit some repro SW yoke buttons, but decided the (albeit scarred) originals are better...just used the repro springs.

Can the people with good results please post their analog settings.

Sorry to go on with my guess work, but I would play around with the 'autocenter speed'.

And a centering mechanism.

Which is where things get squirrely in MAME. Controls behave diffrently for free-floating wheels than they do for centering ones, and it treats RoadBlasters as a free-floating wheel.

True, as it is treated as a dial.  I can't test this but that is why I suggest playing with the 'autocenter speed' - what effect does this have?  I would turn it off (0) to begin with.

....actually it took me hours to set 'em all up correctly but I have a ton of games including roadblasters working great with my SW Yoke.

I'll try to post a list of the game I have working well.

I'll bring in my file (SW settings) on a CD that I can email to anyone who wants to give it a try.

Should be small enough that you can post them here since they are probably config files.

Ok, here are my word docs that tell you what buttons do what.

I reference the Xarcade just because that's my default start button in my set up....so obviously yours will be different...  ::)

I'll post the conf files in a few....BRB for those of you lurking and waiting to flame me yelling "where are the files??!!!"....  :P

OK, I can't for the life of me figure out how to upload cfg files.

If anyone is willing to volunteer let me know and I'll be happy to forward you the zip file with the SW schemes.

Let me know!.....and to the author of this thread....your zip file is on the way as promised!!

Thanks!...I just emailed you the files (to your private email address in your profile).

Regarding the pedals....you're correct; but I've compensated by making one of the triggers the "gas".

Works for me! (see my text files for my schemes).

I hope this helps someone!...or at least sends them in the right direction.

I love my Yoke. And yes, I would marry it if I could.  :-*

Thanks for sending the files.  I misunderstood you, I thought you had MAME .cfg files.  I guess I didn't read carefully enough.  I assume the binary .sws files are schemes that you can load into the Microsoft DualStrike Sidewinder.  I can't figure out how to load them in Windows XP.  I know Microsoft makes Windows 98 software for the Sidewinder, but I thought it was not necessary or compatible with XP.  The XP game controller options don't seem to offer the option.

DEFINITELY download the SW drivers....that's the ONLY way to get this to work 100%.

You should then have a SW file under "controllers" in your programs folder (where you'll find your SW). Double click on the SW folder and you'll then see a folder marked "schemes". Drop my files into there. Your SW should now pop up with my various schemes in your drop down list in the SW "programming" front end. Just choose the scheme you want and then your controller will be programmed with my scheme for that particular game.

You definitely have to adjust the SW NOT Mame to get this to work properly. It's no biggie....and easy to do.

Good Luck!

wow that's interesting....I don't know the exact version of the software (I'll have to check at home) but I installed it w/no problems in XP.

Did you try bypassing the screens that wouldn't let you install and "just install anyway"?.....

But for sure, I was able to successfully load the SW software from the original CD.

Worst case scenario I can burn you a copy and mail it to you.

ahh....the service pack 2. I wonder if that's the key. I never installed that on my mame machine.

I'm guessing that's the problem most likely.

Scheme files.  Rename to SW Schemes.zip
