MAME screenshot grabber
« on: January 10, 2003, 11:32:44 am »
What's the easiest way to grab screenshots from MAME games? Is there a frontend that makes this task easy, like hit a button during game play and it dumps an image into a directory?

I'm trying to figure out the quickest and easiest way to generate a large database of MAME game screenshots without having to scrape other peoples web pages for them. I'd like each image to be properly cropped ie. no black borders outside the game screen in the screenshot.

What is this for you say? I'm going to generate some nice photomosaics for use as marquees and side art, and make them available for the general public to use.

If someone already has a comprehensive db of screenshots that they'd like to contribute, please let me know. The more I have the better the mosaics turn out (like 5000+). They do not need to be hi-res images since they'll get scaled down to tiny thumbnails anyways.

TIA

Press F12 during the game.  The shot goes to the SNAPS directory.

Pressing the F12 key to make a screenshot is also in the docs for Mame.  The key listing is in the windows.txt file which is in the "docs" subdirectory.  I think you should take a look through all the docs for Mame to see just what it can do.

Actually I had perused the files in /docs/ before and had missed this feature. There really is no "manual" per se, just a bunch of files to sift through and glean from them what you can. These .txt files are more of a terse technical reference than a manual. A manual would at least have a table of contents and a somewhat structured format ;)

For Howard, that does constitute a manual.
Build a man a fire, he's warm for a night.  Set a man on fire, he's warm the rest of his life.

For anyone that constitues a manual.  Is it a great one? No.  But should you read every single page available 10 times before you ask a mame-related question? Definately.

There is also http://www.mame.net/mamefaq.html, too.  A lot of answers to common questions like this one can be found there.

If you get em in the zips from the mame32 site, its only 3(?) zip files, and that contains all 2,050 original games

But the Mame32 screenshots suck.  They all have the big stupid white boarder around them.  There is some other website out there that has all good screenshots without the border but I can't remember it offhad.  Mameworld.net probably has a link though.

The Photoshop "trim" function works well to get rid of that. Do a batch operation and you're set.

If you don't have Photoshop, I can zip up the fixed snapshots and make them available.
