  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Innovative Games

This is kind of a "suggest games I might like" topic, but it comes from a realization I had as played my favourite games in mame on my PC.

All arcade games seem to one a few types:
-3rd person driving
-Side scrolling fighting
-Overhead fighter plane/space ship
-Side scrolling fighter plane/space ship

The games that I remember loving in the arcade were games like:
Knights of the round
D&D Tower of Doom / Showdows Over Mystara
Ikari Warriors
Chase HQ
TMNT / Simpsons
Off Road
Black Tiger

I was wondering if anyone had any comments on gameplay  type and any suggestions of real innovation in gameplay from the 80's arcade era.  May I also add that I really appreciated games which used hardware to innovate gameplay like Terminator, Area 51, the Sniper ones I think were called Silent Scope.  Also freewheeling driving games like off road, demolition derby, and the racing one where  you drive around and there are little wrenches and oil slicks on the track.  I might as well throw in the first arcade driving simulator I remember, Hard Drivin'.  But all of these relied heavily on hardware that's not reasonable to build into your first and low budget mame cabinet.
... arcade builders could someday rule the world...currency would be reduced to quarters only, and wars would be settled

Mutant Storm from pompomgames.com in the UK.  It's a neoclassic remix of Robotron without the nonsense of saving humanity.  It's beautiful and hopelessly addictive.  You'll need dual analogue controls or dual 49 Way as Kremmit and I are doing.
Here's to those who say they do...
Here's to those who say they don't...
Here's to those who say they will
And later decide they won't.
