Newbie Control Panel Questions
« on: September 14, 2005, 01:00:59 pm »
Hi all. I originally planned on a two player control panel with just joysticks and the associated buttons. But now that I'm seeing how much fun this cabinet can be, I'm tempted to go all out on it. I'm not at all interested in reproducing the original feel of the games, but I do realize that proper controls are required to play them properly. I also have the feeling that I'd have a blast with my friends if I got 4 player support in there. With that said, this is my current thinking. Please take a look at this and let me know if I'm way off base here.

[Edited to take into account players three and four need four buttons each. Also updated trackball and spinner choice and removed a few questions I found answers to.]

Encoders:
Two GP-Wiz49 MAX 49-Way
I've labeled them as A and B below and shown how many of their 23 non-shifted inputs are left after they have been assigned.

My only comment is that if you are going 4-player then the 3rd and 4th players need 4 buttons. D&D Tower of Doom, and D&D Shadow over Mystara each have 4 buttons and are 4 player.

Ah ha! Thanks much! I enjoy both of those games so getting support for those would be good. I'll update my post with new numbers now.

After some suggestions from people on the board, it looks like I'll be going with the Happs 3" trackball and a Tornado spinner. I've updated the first post with these details.

Do games require all the different player coin and start buttons? That really sucks. How do all you guys handle this one?

Thanks!

Mike

4 Player cabinets generally have a 4 slot coin door, and 4 start buttons.

Yes...certain games (Gauntlet) require a dedicated Coin button (slot) for each player.
