t-Nuts -- Drill bit size?
« on: September 14, 2005, 08:06:26 am »
I picked up some 3/8" T-Nuts at my local Home Depot to mount to the upper-sides of my cabinet.  I had a 3/8 drill bit in a set I bought a while back, and when testing on a scrap peice of MDF I found that the 3/8" is the width of the thread on the T-Nut, not the width of the shaft itself.

That being said, what bit size will provide the tightest fit? 7/16" or 3/4"?  I'd hate to run out and grab a 7/16" only to find it's still too narrow.

...actually come to think of it, do they even sell drill bits that large?  The 3/8" bit I have seemed to just fit into the drill.

Yes they sell them.
Just make sure to get the kind where they reduce the shank down to 3/8", so that they will still fit in your 3/8" drill.

As far as what size you actually need to get, I'm not sure.

I drilled mine to the thread diameter and then used an awl to make the opening slightly bigger.  Then just hit it in with a hammer and you'll have a very snug fit.

I used a 7/16" and it seems fine. It's not all that tight but it's not coming out unless you work at it with some tools. If you want it real snug go with the one between 3/8" and 7/16"
