Psikyo game rock! Who else?
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:40:06 pm »
I have recently discovered the company "Psikyo". They have made some really nice looking shooters and other games. There's always a slightly "alternative" flavour to their graphic design. It's a refreshing change from the typical Capcom, Konami, styles.

Anyways, I was wondering if there are other companies from the mid/late-90's to recent that are worth looking into?

What games have they made and how did you discover them?  Did you do a filter by bios or manufacturer or something?

Yes, Psikyo games rock, especially if you're a shmup fan.  Their graphics and game engines were quite amazing considering the hardware limitations they had.  I'm always blown away by how much detail and how many sprites they can pack into a screen with no slowdown.

Alsoc check out the two companies Atlus and Cave (they often partnered together for many games).  They make the very awesom DoDonPachi which is my alltime favouite shooter.  Tonnes more too.  Use the MAWS search tool to check out the rest.

And if you STILL can't get enough of shooters, then hit http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/ for a huge collection of reviews and whatnot.

A few other companies that made some really nice looking shootemups were Raizing / Eighting, and Visco.

Oh and thanks for the link to Klov.  I had forgotten that Daraku Tenshi was made by Psikyo.  It is a pretty sweet looking fighter.

PS: I'm not just looking for shooters. That just happens to be what Psikyo made alot of. I'm looking for any kinds of games, but that have a high quality. I stopped going to arcades around '98/'99 so there are many games I just never heard of.

Good call.  Another two excellent game houses.

Just confirming CAVE as a must check... They are the creme de la creme of shmups.

Not in MAME, but most of the Sammy 'Atomiswave' games are fun with good replay value and the closest thing to a shmup on the platform is 'Dolphin Blue' which is much closer to an incredible 3D version of Metal Slug. Some people knock it as a blatant ripoff, but as a Metl Slug Junkie I have to say it is a lot of fun. Knights of Valour 7 is a lot of fun, Rumblefish, Demolish Fist, etc....

You could also look for IGS for games like Demon Front if you like the Metal SLug like Genre.

Hope it helps

Actually most of Psikyo's games came out either in 98'/99' or before.

I've got absolutely no problems with "Blatant Ripoffs" if they are done well.  Sammy's Guilty Gear series shows exactly how good a ripoff genre can get.  If Dolphin Blue plays as fun as it looks, then bring it on!

Improving on an already fun genre is never a bad thing, and nor should it be labelled as such.
