WinXP question
« on: January 08, 2003, 06:09:55 pm »
I just got a OEM version of WinXP (full version).  I can't tell if I can install it on a second drive without messing up my first drive (and setup a dual boot).

The only option I have is to do a full install and I don't really want to continue it without knowing if it will distroy my system.

Also, anyone know if it does well dual booting with 98?  I know 2k you want to install 98 first, then 2k afterwords and you are fine (but not the other order).

Anyone know?

Thanks  :D

The install is very similar to windows 2000... it should work the same way I believe..

i've never done a windows XP/98 mix though so I can't tell you for sure..  but the install should be similar

Yes, it will work just fine, and XP should pick up the 98 partition and let you boot to that as well.  The big thing is you need to use the XP bootloader if you plan on using NTFS, since 98 can't read NTFS partitions.

Your other option is to just upgrade to XP....

Actually, upgrade isnt an option... Just install over...

but I want xp for normal use (games/programming).  but I don't want to get rid of 98 for dual trackballs (if I ever get it going)....

probably should just upgrade and get rid of 98 for now... I can always reinstall it later.

Install it on the secound drive, it will automatically create the boot menu for you with your previous install as an option and XP as an option. After XP is installed you can go in XP and change which one it defaults to and how long it gives you to make the choice.

I installed Windows 98 on my XP machine using Partition Magic 8 software.  Works fine with the included Boot Magic software.  I also created a DOS 7 primary partition just for ArcadeOS

MR Bond,

Did you already have XP installed, then create a new partition for 98 and dos 7.  I thought 98 would go in the primary and XP in the next partition ie c: then d:, or does this boot magic (I assume comes with partition magic) make everything work fine.

Reason I'm asking is I will have a new PC very soon *crosses fingers* and will be having dual boot 98SE and XP.  Will probably have a third partition for non installed roms and mp3's.

Cheers

If you install XP first then you need something like boot magic to install other OS's. The preferred method would be to install win98 then install XP and it will handle the boot stuff automagically. If you want more than that you will also have to use something like bootmagic. XP can work with fat32 so if you want you can make the 98 and xp partitions both fat32 and that way you can do things like have one set of roms that both use instead of double installing everything.

Don't whatever you do use NTFS.

FAT32 is faster and the only reason for using NTFS is if you're a network administrator.

Wow, that is so wrong. For a Win98/XP multi boot fat32 would probably be best. If your running straight Xp go with NTFS every time.

Actually, NTFS is a better choice if the system will be XP or 2000 only. It's a journaled OS, so it recovers from crashes much better. However, if it's a dual boot system, I agree that FAT32 is best, since 98 can't see an NTFS partition! :)

Yeah, I installed '98 on an XP machine.  Then I installed the DOS partition.  It was really simple.  It's true that Windows 98 has to be at the beginning of the drive though, within the first 8 gigs I believe, so it will boot correctly.  Win NT has more limitations as far as this goes, but who cares.  As far as I know, Win XP can reside anywhere on the physical disk, at the beginning, mid, or end.
See, I didn't want to wipe out my XP machine just to install '98 for analog+ and my steering wheel (stupid Interact, they don't update their drivers...), and then install XP again.
Boot magic takes care of the duel booting, well actually triple booting.  Win XP, Win 98, and ArcadeOS are all options that show up for a time limit that I set.  You can also set the default.  And if you like, you can use the included software to set up an OS to boot without choosing through boot magic.  If you want to boot into another OS then, just use a boot disk that it creates for you.
Well, that probably didn't help, but whatever  :P
