New girl needs monitor help!
« on: September 07, 2005, 11:42:27 pm »
Alright I am finishing up my cabinet and I put the monitor in and pluged it in and all it does is click! I got this monitor a while ago off ebay. It worked fine. It looked awesome BUT I have had it sitting for a while! It may have been bumped or something. I tried to keep it safe but not alway a garuantee.
So it clicks and what looks like a light bulb, I think it is the tube, in the back gets a little blue spark when it clicks.
I am sorry I don't know all the terminology and parts of the monitor. I can't remember what kind it is but on the back the sticker says "Phillips components

Blue sparks in the neck of the tube? Then the tube has been bumped/broken and is now trash---it's destroyed. You'll need to install a new picture tube or buy another complete monitor.

Alright is that something that can be done fairly easily? Where can you buy the tube? Are they very expensive? How do you know which one it needs? I tried looking up the part # on the net and it didn't help me. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

Amber,

If you bought insurance on your shipping, I would consider filing a claim.  You may also want to contact the seller and see if you can get your money back, or something.

As for a new tube, I would recommend reading the section about discharging monitors, and the like.  BE CAREFUL!  The tubes can hold anywhere from 12,000 to 30,000 volts!   If you are uncomfortable about doing this yourself, you should contact a TV or monitor repair shop in your area after buying a good tube (or they may be able to get a replacement as well).

Are you encouraging her to commit fraud?  She said it worked when she had it.

I guess I misread, sorry.  I didn't mean committing fraud at all.

Well I don't know what to do!!!
I love my monitor! I built my cabinet around the monitor! If I have to get a new one I nees it to be the same size! Anybody have any great deals out there? I paid about $350 for the monitor. I saw Wells Gardener had them for like $700!!!! I don't know where to find a tube for it. Can I just get a 26" TV and use its monitor? From some of the articals I have read I think that is what you do but I can not be sure. If that is the case that I just replace it with the TV tube, what makes the difference in the monitors besides the VGA cable installed on the monitor I have? What gives the arcade monitor a better picture?
If I can find a good deal on a tube will a repair company swap them for me or is it a no no? I happen to have a 26" phillips TV!! What a bummer if I have to use the monitor for my arcade I would have to get a new Plasma TV right in time for football!!! How do I know if the tube would be compatible?
Thanks for the help.

Don't mess with a tube swap like that.. Especially if you're new to the stuff, thats my opinion.  Take the whole monitor to a TV repair shop, see if they can help you out with it..

Using the TV in a mame cab (with TV out on a video card) would be easier, and if you have a good s/video or composite output, it'll look really good.

If nothing else, you should be able to sell the chassis (the board that drives the tube) on ebay to recoup a buck or two.

Amber:

A suggestion would be to include your location in your user profile. That way there's a chance there's a forum member who'd be near you and could help out.

Alright I am going to revive this if I can. My husband is now home from Iraq and life is settling back down so I can work on some projects! The nice cabinet that I built needs to get a working monitor!!
I have not done anything with it since Sept.
So the tube is broken. I can not find out how to get a replacement one.
What is the best step for me to take here? I liked the monitor I have it hooks right up to the computer no messing with setting the thing up or anything, it was pretty well a plug n play monitor.
Where can I get the best deal on another one? I am in Southern CA. I live on Camp pendleton. I called Beston and they want $400+ for a new monitor. I sure hope that is not the best that can be done.
Any help here would be appreciated. If there is anyone nearby that wants to come look at it and see what they think, let me know. I have no idea what brand the monitor was. I tried looking for #s on the chasis but couldn't find anyhting. I could take some pics and post them. Are chasis worth anything? What about the frame is it worth anything? I could sell that stuff and try to recoup some of the money to get another one.
Thanks

Well if you are looking for the TV route (which is what I'm doing) you can find a decent 26" to 27" for as little as $150. Or maybe even cheaper if you are lucky. I went to craigslist for my area and got lucky. Now not all of them will have S-Video which is recommended but doesn't hurt to look.

Yeah the tv route is an option. I have an extra tv but it does not have s-video.  I postrd on another thread trying to figure if there was a way to conect my tv to the computer. Maybe somebody knows how? Otherwise I am going to have to go buy a new tv. Where do you get the adapter and stuff for it and how much $ are we talking?

You could still use an RF modulator to connect your older tv to your video card. It'll be a composite signal which won't be as nice as s-video. They're only about 20 bucks at your local electronics store.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

Well I have been seasrching around on the site today and I found that there is a Chasis conversion of sorts where I can take my tv and put an 8liners chasis on it and it will work. So the Chasis I have discovered is the board and stuff connected to the tube.
So I need to get some measuerments off the tv I have, actually I will make my husband do it since it is electrical, then i give that info to this guy at 8liners (Vic) and he will sell me a new board and I just have to take the one off the tv I have and put his on? I know there is high voltage on the tv I will not be playing with it. I may take it to a tv repair shop so they can help. But my understanding is that my husband can get the ohms off the yoke without discharging it.
So that is my next idea.
Will that plug directly into the computer? Will I have to make many adjustments?

The 8liners chassis will turn your tv tube into a 15khz arcade monitor. You'll need the ArcadeVGA from www.ultimarc.com.
