Commodore 1702 monitor?
« on: January 07, 2003, 12:26:23 am »
I have an old Commodore 1702 monitor from my C64, has anyone tried MAME out on one of these? It might work perfect: not as crisp as a hi res PC monitor, yet not as blurry as a cheaper composite-in TV. It isn't very big, only 13". It should be big enough for a bartop cabinet though. It has separate luma/chroma inputs on the back, so maybe I could figure out how to wire up S-Video to that and avoid the composite signal mix.

I also have a Commodore 1960 monitor from my A1200, I'll have to give that a test too, although it is VGA only and the same size.

I have a Commodore 1084s monitor which is the same size as yours and also sports the Luma and Chroma inputs - maybe it is the same tube? It was a very easy hack to make a cable that splits the s-video cable into two RCA connectors - I searched for the s-video pinouts on Google. Interestingly mine also has an RGB input, but I decided not to go round hacking into that for fear of blowing it up - I love that monitor so much for video work I don't want to kill it!

Mine worked very well attached to a Radeon8500, and yes the picture quality is somewhere between TV and VGA monitor. The only pain was from the interlace flicker using the windows menu, although the Radeon's anti-flicker technology made a big difference. If you're using a DOS-based front-end it probably won't be so bad.

Definitely worth the effort of making a cable and trying it I reckon.

The RGB inputs on a 1084 are not PC compatible.  The Amiga computer used a different standard because of it's NTSC compatible video modes.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

You may want to try a small 12" VGA monitor. I've seen them go locally for about 20 bucks. If you'd rather not spend more money, I can offer to buy it from you to complete my C-64 collection.

I have two 13" VGA monitors, a 1960, 1084s and a 1702 all from the Amiga years. I'll test each one and see how they look. If I decide to part with the 1702 I'll let you know :)
