Are the coin chutes (a.k.a. mechs) plastic, metal, or metal/plastic? Cleaning methods vary from type.
The solid plastic tannish/brownish COINCO brand can be cleaned by throwing them in a sink full of hot, soapy water just like it says right on them. Rinse, shake off the water and blow dry. These types of coin chutes need no lubrication whatsoever.
The solid metal coin chutes should be completely disassembled for proper cleaning, but if taking these apart and loosing several critical adjustments scares you, then here is what you do. Spray liberally with common household cleaner like 409 or Mean Green. Scrub with a toothbrush. Now rinse with hot water. Next boil a pan full of water and drop the coin chute (complete) into it and let boil for 10 minutes. Carefully dump out the boiling water into the sink and let the coin chute cool off and blow it dry with a fan. The only part of a metal coin chute that should be lubricated is the hinge pin that the magnet gate pivots on when you swing it open. A couple of drops of light oil is good.
If you have metal/plastic chutes clean the same as if it was a solid plastic one but dry it off as fast as possible so the metal parts don't rust. The only lubrication these need are at the hinge pin. Again only a couple of drops of light oil are all that's needed.
NEVER EVER USE WD-40!
