Twinsticks
« on: August 20, 2005, 11:38:24 pm »
Yo, I've been meaning to play virtual on (dreamcast) the right way for a while.  The best way to do that is with a set of twinsticks.  Toys n joys has one for $100 (ouch)  Happ controls has a single stick of the same style for around $180 (multiply that by 2, not pretty)  So i was wondering a coulple of things.  My new intention is to build a set of twinsticks.

1.) what whould be a cheap way to aquire twinsticks, flightsticks, etc.

2.)  How whould i wire a twinstick setup to a hacked dc controller.

Thank you and goodnight.

What do twinsticks look like?  Sorry if that's a dumb question.

Like so, they replicate how you'd play in the arcade.

Ah hah!

There are a number of threads about trigger sticks...  You'd just need two.

Are they analog or 4/8-way?

not sure, i think they need to be both, does that make sense?

Its tank styled controll, now apply that to a dc controller.  Thats kinda it.

Umm, mabie someone else should explain.  Have you played voot before?

Without seeing the inside of one, it's hard to tell exactly how to hack one.
If they are digital sticks, it would be a simple matter of replacing the existing contacts with ones from real arcade sticks.
(Xenophobe/Discs of Tron sticks would be good candidates for this).

If they are analog, you would quite probably need to replace the pots in two arcade analog sticks with pots measuring the values used in the sticks you are planning to hack.
I'm not sure if you can hack a regular DC gamepad for this either.

If not, that would mean buying the twin sticks AND two Happ analog sticks....Triple OUCH!
You can usually pick up the Happ analogs on ebay for considerably less than Happ sells them, but it would still be a VERY expensive proposition.
I'm not sure how cheap Ponyboy sells them in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here, but he has all the Happ stuff (new) at a significant discount.

As far as them being both analog and digital, that's not really probable.
They may be analog, and have an Analog-Digital converter inside the controller that would allow them to ACT as digital controllers, however.
I've never even seen a Dreamcast though, so I'm completely speculating here.

Ok, let me explain in as much detail as possable.

                   DC=Arcade(twinstick)
Left             Left Digital/both sticks left
Right           Right Digital/both sticks Right
Up                Up Digital/  Both sticks Foward
Down           Down Digital/Both sticks Back
Pivot left           left analog/left stick back, right stick foward
Pivot Right       Right analog/lefr stick foward, right stick back

Dash              X,B/ Top buttons
Attack             Triggers/ triggers on sticks
Jump                   Y/ left stick left, Right stick Right
Guard                 A/left stick Right, Right stick left

Start....is start (duh)

This might be a tad more complicated than i thought, oh well, any help will be appreciated.

Virtual On sticks are digital.

And as I understand things, the Saturn Twin STicks should be a fair bit cheaper than the DC ones.
The Saturn controller was massively overproduved, and many retailers were STILL struggling to clear out old stock when the DC came around. Sega overcompensated, and massively UNDERproduced the DC twinsticks.

This fixed retailer problems nicely, as smeone in Hong Kong made a Saturn TwinStick->DC TwinStick adapter. And a lot of people bought that and a Saturn TwinStick, because it was WAY cheaper than DC twinsticks.

Well, the one place i found that sells them, the prices aren't that cheeper.

DC=$99.95

Saturn=$89.99 w adapter included

Both are from toysnjoys.com

If you know a place that sells them cheaper, enlighten me, please.
(no really please, i'd like to know.)

Well, they were cheaper a few years ago... Guess they cleared all the stock out.

EBay? Only see 2 pair of Saturn sticks, though they're about half the price of the one set of DC sticks I see.
But the shipping drags them back up to what your source has them for.

I looked around everywhere for these years ago, and couldn't find them for a better price.  I ended up just getting them from ToysnJoys.  They were expensive, and it took a long time for me to get them, but I was happy with the final result.

Jim

Them, as in more than one!?  Must be nice, thats all i gotta say.  Wish i could afford toysnjoys though, id make things easier.

I have seen some info on DC twinsticks recently... I believe the left stick is wired to standard digital directions, the right stick is wired to 4 buttons (not sure which ones).

This seems to refer mostly to the saturn, witch does not help me as the dreamcast version i have does not support the same button layouts.  It was a nice read however.

LOL, well, iam a ddr nut, but I don't have 2 colbalt fluxes in my room.  Although My birthday is comeing up, i doubt i could convince any of my family into a $500+ investment ;D  I'd have a better shot at getting a twinstick or two, but at this point, Id rather build it.  If something breaks, i can fix it easy.  The only thing is, I need to know how to wire it up to a dc pad and have it work.

I would love to get two Cobalt flux pads.  I will someday, but I just don't have the funds right now.  I'd help you with the wiring, but I don't have a clue how it translates to what contacts on the DC controller.

Hmm, I was unnaware there was another bemani freak on these forums, although should i be surprised?  Anyway, Iam gonna wire it to a saturn pad (instructions in linked forum)  and use a converter.  So if you (or anyone really) can give a link to purchase the Total Controll 3 adaptar in stock for a reasonable price, please respond.

Slightly OT, but since the discussion was going there...

I'm supposed to be building a DDR cabinet for a family member (must learn to say NO one of these days...) and was looking for dimensions.

Anyone seen any dimensioned drawings?  I layed out a cad drawing, but my dimensions are purely theoretical.

I'd feel kinda awkward going into the local Dave N Busters with a tape measure. :)
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

I don't mind, lets just not make a habbit out of it, i don't think the mods will like it.  I have some hand drawn dimentions, I'll get them in paint later, Ill put them here i guess.

back on topic, there must be some us retailor that carrys them.  I am not sure if price is that important, but i won't chop off an arm and or a leg to pay for one.  And yes shipping from the other side of the pond whould kill me.
and i don't trust e-bay...at all.
