Question on lightguns...
« on: August 18, 2005, 10:58:23 am »
Well I recently started my own emu project on another site and in the process of my researching I came across this site. Totally cool I must say!  And I am thruoughly enjoying reading all the projects and stuff.  Then I started to think back to my brief arcade days and one game came to mind... Time Crisis.  Everyone has thier own 'money pit' game and this one was mine (both I and II) and I thought, I could die a happy man having one of these cabs, especially if I made it myself so I started looking around the web and on this site.  And on happcontrols I came across These guns _Perfect! and the holsters. Dug around found my game disc, then found a mame rom for it and then it hit me... The lightgun is likely designed for the commercial cab release of the game and not some keyboard emulator.  And so the reason for posting this is, has anyone seen or heard of a way to interface (atleast one) of these guns to a PC for the purpose of emulation. Or perhaps a Playstation(2) and then put that in a cabinet.

That being said If this is not possible, can anyone recommend something that would give the same (or as close as possible) to the original arcade feel of the system (foot pedal and all)

Before anyone asks, yes I did search these forums quite a bit before posting this (had to register to do so ;) ) and the closest I found was something about an optiwolf lightgun but w/o success.

Secondly I am aware of the option of buying one of the cabinets used but loking around Im not too keen on spending 2000+ USD to get one. Just dont have that kind of money (and couldnt justifiy it anyways)

All help and opinions are much appreciated, thanks.

I believe your best option at the moment would be to go with the Playstation Guncon2 (or compatible) guns. This way, you can put in a Playstation 2 with all the PS timecrisis games. These guns come in every size and shape, you can probably find one that looks good for you.

As an added benefit, you can now use Guncon2 gun's with your PC via a driver ( see http://guncon.acornscity.com ) - they work great with MAME.

I believe there are a few guns that support a pedal reload/hide, such as the Mission Gun but aquiring the pedal may be difficult. Hacking in a pedal, if you are proficient in such things, would be quite possible and easy.

I have found the necessary instructions for hacking in a pedal and it should be far from difficult.

And inmy searching actually came across your site and others (thru the lightgun BYOAC thread) so it seems that is my best option.  Now to just find a decent guncon2 gun and a PS2 that works consistently :)

Thanks for the thoughts!

if you figure out how to use that gun on a mame cabinet and it works for time crisis with the pedal you will be my gaming god.

The guncon2's already work on mame cabinets. You just have to hack in a pedal to one of the guns buttons.

What I don't get is why does everyone keep trying to hack the pedals into the guns? Why don't people just put them into a keyboard encoder?

Because the guns already have the key that the pedal uses and will thus consume one less terminal on your encoder.  Plus makes for one less cable to disconnect if you wish to remove the gun.  Basically what you are doing is a gamepad hack, but keeping the original game pad ;)

There was a discussion on this a while back.. but I can't remember where I read it. I think the outcome was that you would have to develop for this gun if you got it, rather than plugging it in and having it work. There were also issues with availability, and obviously price. If your getting it for specific game and board... that I don't know about.

ya, that topic is in the BYAOC lightgun thread.  But no followup was there so I brought it up here too.  Though that part of the thread was old and according to the r0r3 site it says it supports USB interface with windows (and not just PS2 anymore) so thats why I asked.
