Mortal Kombat 2 Restore Project
« on: August 17, 2005, 03:13:38 pm »
Hello all :)

Just to let you know a little bit about me I have been building mame cabinets for a very long time now. I have 28 mame cab projects under my belt (Built and sold). However This restoration project is a new one for me and I am rather excited about it.

The problem I am having is what I need to get this thing done. I have supplied a picture showing what came with the cab, I am pretty sure the power supply is toast and so is the power pack. Although the power pack MIGHT still work I have no way to test it.

The cab comes with a working PCB (CPU) board and all other required boards (DCS sound). From what I have gathered by looking at it is all of the wiring is still intact, the coin door test switches and all that are there, joysticks, buttons and so on are also there (which will be replaced).

Included in the below picture I have snapped a picture of a power supply I took from another cab which I think powered a jamma cab, please correct me if I am wrong on any of this as I want to make a good go at restoring this cab.

Back to the power supply issue. will the one in the picture below WORK with the MK2 PCB and power pack? It looks simular and I think the voltage and all of that is the same. Also where can I aquire a new power pack and power supply IF needed that will work?

I will also purchase a 25" arcade monitor to replace the missing one :)

All in all I need some help regarding this cab. Thanks for your time.

You can check out my project here . The MK3 cab I used is nearly identical to the MK2 design in terms of dimensions, stock monitor and wiring config. If you have any questions, let me know. I'd be glad to help.

How do you know your not getting power, check the fuses and look for the PCB to light up to see if it's getting power.

I have a similar power supply i could sell you once you find out if you really need it.

I just got off the phone from the guy who gave me the cab and he recalls that the PCB, Power Supply and even the power pack should work :) He said that he tossed the cab because of the monitor dying on him and he did not feel like buying a new monitor for it as he would not make his money back on such an investment.

So as far as I can tell from what he said, I should be able to install a monitor and power it up and it should work no problem. If thats the case I am gonna be very happy :)

I am going out to my garage right now to clean it out and take a real close look inside. I will let you know.

Tommy; thanks for the offer, I will let you know whats going on.

M3talhead; Awesome looking project man. nicley done. I am going to restor this to being a dedicated cab though. I do not want to mame a cab like mine as it is in really good condition. Your picture have aided me quite a bit though. Thanks

Ok I turned it on and it makes the "BONG" sound when it boots. However when I insert quarters you do not hear the MK music or the insert quarter sound.

Now I am thinking that it is mostly due to not having a monitor installed? Is the cpu board giving an error that I do not see? Like "NO MONITOR" hahaha Lets hope so. As I said the bong sound does state that it is reading the CPU board and the DCS sound works.

Whats your thoughts ?

Also I have fully restored the marquee and the controlpanel art to it original state :) it looks sharp, take a look below to see for yourself.

If you get the "Bong" when you insert a coin, its possible that the attraction mode music is turned off, or is really low. You control this through the operator's menu. Dont give up yet. Hook it up to a monitor/tv and see for yourself what the problem is before you throw anything out.

Oh hell I will not throw anything out or give up, this cab will become a restor MK 2 cab :) That I promise.

One other question will a Wells Gardner 7000 series monitor work with this game ?

Thanks

Any arcade monitor capable of 15khz will - a wg 7000 series was most likely the original monitor anyway! I have a similar cab from Midway that came with a WG 25k7197 =)
