CP box, hinges?
« on: August 16, 2005, 05:41:06 pm »
OK have been looking around and trying to figure out how I want to access the underside of my CP in the box enclosure.

I thought about using a paino hinge, but not sure how to connect to the CP top.  MDF isn't the greatest wood for holding screws well.

I also thought about using 6-8 cabinet door locks, the metal clip things used to keep cabinet doors closed (not the magnetic kind).

Any other suggestions or pics of what others have done?

Thanks

I used a couple good sized hinges on the outside front, so it opens up like a corvette hood (toward you).  It works fine, and you can add a length of cable or chain to secure it if you are worried about overextending the range of the hinge and ripping out the screws.  If I had to do it over again, I would've designed it to open away from you with some of those good cabinet hinges.  It's a little difficult working on it otherwise.

I used piano hinge... BUT because of what you said about MDF not being the best holder of screws, I drilled out 1/2" holes and glued in 1/2" hardwood dowel rod at each screw location.

You can see the eight dowel pegs along the front edge clearly after that first coat of paint.

Here are the piano hinges installed:

Seems to have worked well so far.

Sorry if this is a pseudo thread hijack, but I'm also wondering about hinges, but in my case I'd like a swappable CP.

My idea would be to have the same casing, but the top sheet of MDF (where the controls all attach to) could come right out and be swapped when necessary.  Is there a type of hinge that would work for that, while keeping the CP top down securely?
