Is a 19 inch pc monitor too small?
« on: August 15, 2005, 12:45:11 am »
Im going to build a replica moonwalker cabinet as I am finishing up my mame cab, it will be run by mame, but only play moonwalker, basically im building a dedicated moonwalker replica, and using an old pc instead of a pcb. My question though, would a 19 inch pc monitor be too small? or would that be ok, I could go out and buy a 24 inch tv, but I would have to spend more money, and dont know how I would get the computer to work with it, since its really old and has no outputs besides for a pc monitor.  Im just debating if I should do this with what I have, or buy a bigger monitor. what do you think. Any of you use 19 inch pc monitors and have pics on how they look in a cab?, thanks.

It depends on what you want.

I find the 19inch monitor in my cab to be the perfect size for what I want. It is pretty big and I wouldnt want to go any smaller. But bigger starts to get pricey and it means your cab has to get bigger.

ive noticed that 21 inch pc monitors arent too pricey second hand. ive decided thats what ill use in an upright. true, 19" is comparitively a lot cheaper again but either way its a small part of the total cost...

Like has been said, it depends on the size of your cab and what you are happy with.

I managed to get a second hand reconditioned 22" PC CRT for

I think you should fit an original arcade monitor. PC monitors are.......pc monitors......
The TV would be a better (closer) thing to the original...

Arcade Monitor: sooo expensive, would go this route but the cost is ridiculous.

TV- Would definately go this route, but have like a 7 year old computer with no special outputs on the video card, so dont know How I could get it running on the tv.
Anyone know where to get an arcade moniotr for cheap?

You can just pick up a video card that has video output and that will allow you to hook up to a TV.  But I wouldn't be doing anything else on it because using a TV as a PC monitor is way to fuzzy.

I picked up a refurb IBM 21" Flat Screen Trintron from Tigerdirect for $139 however the shipping was an extra $65 on top of that.  Still not bad for a great multisync monitor.
Super Sprint - In Progress ($150)
Moon Patrol MAME - Completed ($670)
Tic-Tac-Strike Puck Bowler - Restored ($1200)

I picked up my 19" compaq for $30AUD which was dirt cheap so I wouldnt want to go bigger really especially since it is slotting into a 20" Lowboy

you could always buy a Radeon 7000 from  newegg for $25 and it has built in s-video and composite outputs for connecting to a TV.. of course depending on the cost of the TV you might be better off buying a monitor  :-\  here's a link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142021

what about a scan convertor? I will be a dedicated cab replica so a fuzzier screen may make it look more original.

I use an nvidia geforce card w/ tv out...it has dual display allowing me to run my monitor (with a VGA exension) on my desk about 5 feet from the cab (where my keyboard and mouse sits) as well as my TV in the cab at the same time.
