A Very Different Kind of Keyboard Hack
« on: January 01, 2003, 06:53:58 pm »
Slightly OT: but come on... work with me here.

http://www.multipledigression.com/typewriter/

as seen on slashdot, this guy hacked an old Smith-Corona mechanical typewriter to act as a computer keyboard (see his wife has RSI and the old clunker is actually easier for her to type with evidently...)

I remember first seeing the old antiuqe typewriter as a keyboard back in the 80's on the Max Headroom TV series...it was very "cyberpunk".  I've always though about doing this hack.  Nice to see someone who did.

Slashdot had a similar article a month or two back on a guy who modded his Mac classic into a 1920'ish looking contraption.  Very cool.

Besides that's what slightly OT means...

It's pretty insentive of you, snaaake... There might be gamers out there with RSI, or will have RSI soon... and then how will they mame???

I like to think i've done a small service by sharing this unusual/inventive work around with the community...

Since when did you become a forum nazi snaaaake =P (the hunted has become the hunter, perhaps...) ?

Now you could have been little nicer then that and told me what phalic means or let me know about online dictionary but instead.....

See I am not trying to start any war here but THINK before you write(make sure you are NOT insulting anyone).

that is a cool hack!

now you can attempt to hack a real clutch and stickshift from a manual transmission automobile ;)

i'm sure you could get one easy from a pick and pull. .hehehehe
especially if you can make your cockpit cab jerk a little as it shifts in to the next gear

Hmmm, getting a cockpit cab into my basement was going to be a challenge but what would it take to put a car in my basement?

That why you have to leave the old transmission attached. Thats how you get the authentic feel....  ;)

Well you need everything spinning when the game is running so that you get real driveline vibrations. I'm going to have to find a way to exhaust the muffler outside and still keep the authentic sound of the engine.

I think I need to play a driving sim game. I'll be back later I'm going to take my car around the block. I think that will be pretty close to being authentic.  :)

Have we taken this far enough off topic yet?

Dear Snaaake,
We've all had enough of your inconsiderate nature. Your words have the power to hurt others, and they do. We've been hurt enough; our hearts ache from your bitter attacks. Enough: let us work as a team, a family, a cohesive unit that nurtures and respects each other. Its through this behavior that we may all make each other better people, and only then can we be truly happy with ourselves and others.
Thank you so very much,
Rampy
