Metal Slug 2 Slow - Processor?
« on: January 01, 2003, 12:40:20 pm »
I played Metal Slug 2 for the first time today on my new cab and it's the first Mame game that I have noticed slow down when there is a lot of screen activity (usually a Boss and 5+ enemies).  Here is my system config:

Mame32 latest version
Win 98SE
Intel VC820 Motherboard
Intel P3 1 gig
384mb Rambus
Trident T64 video

Is the processor too slow?  or  Could it be Mame32?

Anyone else able to run MS2 on an equal or lesser machine without slowdown? please let me know?

Marco

I run it on a 733 with 640 megs of ram. It runs smooth as silk.  I use windows command line .61 and Gamelauncher.

Maybe more ram would help? I went from 128 to 640 and it was night and day. Since I made such a huge jump I'm not exactly sure where the ram threshold is but i do know that ram makes a monstrous difference in mame.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

Hmm... maybe its Mame32?  Do you think I should run a dos version of Mame?

Could be your video card. What chipset is it?

I can't believe you need to run dos on a 1 gig computer. Try windows command line and see if it's better.

(EDIT)

press f11 and if its 100% then the emulation is good but the game itself is choopy.I bet its the game itself.

I think it is suposed to slow down when lots of stuff on the screen (the original hardware could not handle all of the activity).

The 68000 processor in the original system are to slow so when you get a slowdown
its mame emulating the original perfect. From the FAQ at www.mame.net:

I06. Hard Drivin', Metal Slug 2 and Double Dragon are choppy, but I have enough CPU power.
Although the FPS counter shows 100% speed for these games, they may appear choppy. This is true to the original - even the original hardware of these games struggled with them and therefore the choppiness is actually accurate emulation of these games. You may be able to get rid of it in some cases by using the -cheat parameter, hitting the tilde key and browsing the on screen menu until you find "CPU overclocking". This will run the emulated CPU faster which may or may not fix it. It may also cause the emulation to have errors, so don't bug people if overclocking screws up a game.

I've run MAME on my 1800xp chip with my GF4TI4600 and still ran into some slowdown.  Seems the same wether I run it on my 1800 or my 1gig T-bird setup.

Alright, you will thank me for this one if you're a neo geo fan.  Go here:
http://216.239.39.120/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&langpair=it%7Cen&u=http://www.anigames.it/emulatori.htm&prev=/language_tools
Then scroll down to where it says Neo Geo *btw, it's translated from Italian, so it sounds kinda weird*  And get either NeoRage0.8c or NeoRageX hack -new- (I haven't tried that one yet)  I know for a fact that on my Pentium 300mhz with a 8mb video card and 128mb of ram (yeah, it's a crappy computer for being in a cabinet, but it was free) I can run King of Fighters 2002 full speed, with a slight choppy-ness when I've loaded a new level and a new set of characters up, but it only happens for the first 2 seconds.  You also have to find the Neo Geo bios, but that's easy, I think www.geoshock.com has them.
     -enjoy

I have played several NeoGeo games in the arcades and yes they do "slow" down sometimes when lots of stuff is happening all at once on the screen.

Yeah, it could be the game.  Alot of people think double dragon is slow in mame.  NOPE! that's how it is on the arcade machine (I know, I have one!).

Also, the nebula emulator run neogeo and capcom games MUCH better than mame.  On my PIII 500 metal slug will run at 36fps in mame and 78fps in nebula.
