how to wire an audio reciever to a pc sound card
« on: August 10, 2005, 04:35:40 pm »
The title of this basically says it all. I am buying a reciever from Circuit City (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=108880) to hook up 4-6 old speakers (4 of them originally came with the jukebox I'm building) and I want to hook the reciever up to a pc sound card. The sound card I have now is nothing fancy, it just has one input jack for speakers. I was wondering if I could hack the line from a cheap set of pc speakers or would I need a special cable? I will buy a new soundcard if necessary, also. I did some searching but couldn't find anything that close to what I was looking for, though I wouldn';t be too surprised if someone had already brought this up.

Thanks in advance!

I used a simple cable with mini jack on one end and dual RCA jacks on the other.

That seems to be the best way to accomplish this cheaply.  On newer sound cards and recievers, there is a digital out on the sound card that could be directly ran into a digital in on the receiver.  I have a receiver that is from the mid 90's that does not have this option.  I used the suggestion above.  I suggest checking out some of the home theatre sites to get a good sound card for surround sound if that is what you are going for. Here is one: http://www.htpcnews.com/

Allright, thanks! Just what I was looking for. Plus in my price range! I'm not really trying for a surround sound system, so I'll probably just be keeping what I have now. However, I will remeber the link for my next project... heh heh heh.
